Got me back into an old hobby

Photography has always been a hobby of mine, but I never really went into the technical details of the art before. Not for lack of want, but I didn't really know how to start. I found this book and decided that it might be able to help me further my knowledge of my favorite hobby. Yeah, it did. This is a great book - there are a lot of questions that I never really even knew I needed the answers for that this book covers. I never knew the importance of shutter speed before, and I'm not gonna lie, I didn't even really understand aperture before this book either. What's nice is, this book makes these things really easy to understand for the beginner by using simple language and never assuming you know too much. There are a lot of visual aids too, and those helped a ton because I could compare them to my own pictures and gauge if I was doing well or not. Glad I read this, it's sparked my love for photography once again.

Great Book! Highly Recommended!

I just recently got into photography and this is by far the most useful resource that I have found. This book covered everything I needed to know to get started and I haven't looked back. I've been using the techniques from this book to great effect. The fact that I can use it as a reference since I have the Kindle app on my phone is amazing when I am out and about taking pictures. I cannot recommend this book enough if you are looking for something to help your photography.

It's Like A Photography Course On Your E-Reader

This is a very helpful & comprehensive overview of DSLR photography. It covers the various parts of a camera, and how each part affects the outcome of a photo. Then it delves into photography techniques & "tricks". There were a couple of things that I hadn't even heard of before -- such as "panning" -- and I am very interested in trying those. I would recommend this book for all new photographers.

Indeed, the calmed body may be a new object entirely, as void as it is beautifully scarred by its new understanding: "form empties itself / on its way to heaven."

Written during a period of chronic, debilitating illness, this powerful fifth collection from Lambda Award–winning poet Teare (Companion Grasses) chronicles his struggle "to learn to think with pain"—to not only endure "days of headache," but to make meaning of those days. Observing hospital visits and "events/ like the calm after vomiting," his lyrics are austere but also deeply affecting, intellectually generous, and formally dazzling. Inspired by the minimalist compositions and metaphysical writings of abstract painter Agnes Martin, Teare treats each poem like a "field of consciousness." Arrayed across the page, their parallel stanzas sometimes coincide; like Teare's undiagnosable sickness, they invite multiple readings. At other moments, their arrangements are akin to spikes of pain, interrupting ordinary syntax. Indeed, Teare's suffering is such an overwhelming presence here that he sometimes ascribes it agency: "What is the ideal/ state of illness," he wonders in one poem, "does it want/ to attain anything." Regardless of its purpose, Teare manages to wring some wonder from his suffering. "Illness," he writes, "shares/ its few virtues/ with art... in not being ‘of'/ or ‘for' anything." Teare's virtues, on the other hand, are undeniable; these meditations give rare voice to an experience for which humans have little language. (Oct.)\n

About the Author
A former Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, Brian Teare is the recipient of poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the MacDowell Colony, Headlands Center for the Arts, and the American Antiquarian Society. He's published five full-length books—The Room Where I Was Born, Sight Map, the Lambda Award-winning PLEASURE, COMPANION GRASSES, and THE EMPTY FORM GOES ALL THE WAY TO HEAVEN—as well as the chapbooks Pilgrim, Transcendental Grammar Crown, and ] up arrow [. After over a decade of teaching and writing in the San Francisco Bay Area, he's now an Assistant Professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he makes books by hand for his micropress, Albion Books.

Le Carre at his best

Le Carre at his best. It's a bit complex when it comes the the list of characters - especially when considering one has multiple identities which keep changing. Outside of a thoughtful twisting, turning plot, I most enjoyed the careful and thorough descriptions of places, scenes and the characters themselves. Having first watched the 6-part BBC mini-series with the same name, I would suggest reading the book first. At the end of the day they are both superbly done, although the updating in the visual representation looses many of key elements I enjoyed in the book.

Brilliaant book that is hard to put down. Different from the mini-series but there are similarities there too. Loved it and would recommend it highly for anyone who loves a book about intrigue, action and danger.

I read this book while watching the AMC tv series (which was wonderful!). The book gave much helpful depth to the tv series, while the tv series gave some neat visuals to complement the book!

I still gave him this book to help in becoming a better and more educated person

My coworker told me about this book. You see, I have two brother in laws who curses all the time. I also have a brother who does also curses. I truly believe that people who feel a need to express themselves using curse words is uneducated and have no respect for he or herself or the person they are talking with. I gave this to one of my brother-in-laws for Father's Day. Although, I believe he finally realized how he sounds when using those words because he has made remarkable changes in his vocabulary, I still gave him this book to help in becoming a better and more educated person. Taming Your Tongue not only speaks about cursing, but also about complaining, gossiping, and other things we need to take note of when speaking. I bought four of these because I plan to give to my other brother-in-law for his birthday and my brother for his birthday. I also want to keep one for me. It never hurts to educate ourselves. You won't go wrong with purchasing this book and giving it to someone who feels a need to curse, complain, or talk about others.

I love this book, it is an easy read and was delivered promptly! This book gives practical explanations and examples of some very basic principles that we often times overlook. It displays many perspectives of what to say and what not to say.......all food for thought. I found that it has helped me to become a better listener. This not only helps others to open up more - but makes them feel better knowing that they have been heard. It encourages you to become less selfish and more open to the thoughts and ideas of others. This ultimately leads to having more consideration and patience - encouraging better relationships and people skills. Understanding others is key to building trust and genuine friendship(s). This book is good as a daily devotion and/or affirmations. It also helps with the development of self discipline as it relates to words - which are so easy to dish out, but almost impossible to take back! There is truly power and an art to "Taming your Tongue!"

So far good but....

So far this book is good but I did have an issue with the whole 'complimenting people being deceitful'. I just don't agree with that. Yes there are people who compliment others because they want something and that is wrong, however, the bible does say we are to lift each other up. Not all complimenting is bad. I compliment my son for doing a good job with his alphabaet. If my friend is dressed nice for her interview I will compliment her. I don't think all complimenting is bad. Maybe the author was a bit vague in this area.

Other than that the book is a good read so far.
