About the Author

Geoffrey L. Greif, DSW, LCSW-C is Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.  He is the author of books and articles related to family issues and men’s and women’s relationships.  A previous book of his, Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships, was published in 2009. In 2010 he received the University of Maryland Board of Regents faculty award for teaching.

Kathleen Holtz Deal, PhD, LCSW is Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She is the author of articles and book chapters related to supervision and professional development. In 2011 she received the award as outstanding teacher at the University of Maryland Baltimore campus.

Immensely Valuable for Couples and a Pleasure to Read

TWO PLUS TWO is the latest of nearly ten books by Dr. Geoffrey L. Greif---several of them, like this one, written with distinguished colleagues. Each has been a delight to read ( I have profited from all ). While each has provided useful grist for the scholar's mill, each also is written in a delightful style accessible to the general reader, of which I am one. The books are devoid of academic jargon and other mystifying elements.
Two by Two introduces the reader to a subject with which all couples have experience, but about the implications of which we probably rarely think: the profound importance of and benefit couples derive from friendships with other couples, and the effects of such relationships upon the partners and their marriages.
As with Dr. Greif's other works, the book explains clearly the methodology, the expectations, the results (anticipated and surprising), and the lessons for scholars, but principally the lessons for readers---- here for couples of all ages, races, etc.
The book is not long, and is an easy read. It uses stories of real couples (names changed)and their experiences, a format essential to its entertaining, reader-friendly mode.
I recommend it without reservation.

A Great Introduction to Classic Literature

I am a high school English teacher, and I am a huge fan of the original Treasure Island. That said, I love the Classic Start series as a mother who believes in introducing my children to the classics from a very early age. I began using the series with my daughter when she was five. We have read Black Beauty, The Little Princess, Heidi, and Pollyanna to name a few, so I am very familiar with the content of the series, and I keep coming back for more.

My son just turned six. There is no way that he would be able to sit through nor understand the original, but with this abridged version, he not only becomes familiar with the story, he falls in love with it as well. We began reading Treasure Island last night, and he begged for more and more. Finally, after six chapters I insisted that I needed to read to his older sister. While I did, this little kindegartner slugged through another chapter, struggling over every word to try to get more of the story. I couldn't have been more thrilled; that is the love of reading and the love of good literature with which I am trying to bless my children.

Classic Starts are a fantastic way to begin, in my opinion. I see no difference between a beginning pianist first learning an easy version of a classical piano concerto and a young reader first introduced to an abridged version of a classic that, in it's original form would be above both his context and vocabulary level. I am sure that when my son does encounter the original, and he will--I'll make sure of that--he will not only be more ready, he will be more excited to get the rest of the story, thanks to his familiarity with and fondness for Billy Bones, Jim, and Long John Silver. Beware - this version is heavily abridged.

Please note: Treasure Island
This title is heavily abridged and aimed at children but, the Amazon title doesn't tell you this. From the inside cover of the book:

"This Great classic for Children by Dalmation press has been carefully condensed and adapted from the original version ... We kept the well-known phrases for you. We kept the author's style. And we kept the important imagery and heart of the tale."

With its large font and many illustrations the book comes out to 181 pages; whereas, the Sterling Classic unabridged with its regular sized font and no illustrations comes out to 232 pages. This gives an indication of how condensed this version is.

This one has its place as a kids version and should be clearly marked as such.

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!

Treasure Island is perhaps THE classic pirate's tale. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.

Jim Hawkins is the hero of the story and he's a good lad with a stout heart. Long John Silver is the real star, however, and his character is a fascinating character study in moral ambiguity... or perhaps a study in amoral perfection. The pirate language is good and thick but this edition has plenty of notes to help you decipher some of the references that have become too obscure for today's readers. The plot moves along very briskly with no wasted scenes.

In short, Treasure Island well deserves its status as a beloved classic. It's a story of suspense and adventure that can be enjoyed at a child's level, but has substance for adults as well. I would recommend without reserve it to virtually anyone.

Spend your money on Merriman by buying something else

This book was an enormous disappointment. First off I like Merriman. I came across him reading his weekly update which is enjoyable and sometimes very informative. Since the service is free I thought I would throw some money his way and I picked this book as the vehicle to do so. I forked over $95 a bit outrageous but not in the context in which I wished to spend it. I'm happy to see that Merriman or someone has reduced the price to 77.61. It needs to go lower and even then I'm not sure I would recommend this book. Here's why. With a title that uses the words Solar Lunar correlations I would be looking for an in depth study of cycles relating to the sun and moon phases. The frequency of a peak or crest at various phases and some kind of statistical relevancy. The behaviour of markets around these points and perhaps some follow up as to whether the time of year mattered. I would also have hoped for some study of the metonic and saros cycles, eclipses etc. That would be the minimum for a book that costs $95. Here's what you get. Merriman looks only at 4% moves and their frequency depending on which sign the sun moon and the planets Venus and Mercury are in. He fine tunes it a little to see if there is greater frequency peaks or crests, but what you get are bunch of tables. Now maybe in it's own right this might be an interesting study if he backed it up with a statistical analysis of the significance. In other words what is th elikelyhood that results are merely random anomalies. Unfortunately the statistics are pretty much useless. Even in the case of the Dow which has the largest dataset you just don't have the amount of data to generate any meaningful answers. And in fact it's not surprising that there are no signiture 1 signals whereas there are some for the Nikkei and the Naz (as the greater amount of data is showing that any corellation is reverting to zero). Let me give you an example say you want to see if the Dow is likely to reverse to today. So you check. The Sun is in Taurus and the Moon is Libra and will be for about 2 1/2 days. Will the market reverse. You look it up. Merriman gives it weighting of 100 meaning the statistical probability of a reversal is equal to a chance reversal based on the total data set. But now look at the amount of times an actual reversal occurred with this Sun Moon combo: 7. Now how many data points for a combo that has a high probability: That would be the Sun in Taurus Moon in Cancer: The number of ocurrences is 11. It seems like a big difference but it's statistically meaningless. That could happen randomly when number of occurences is so low. There are a few interesting observations in the book and a methodolgy for trading but without more rigorous statistics it would be hazardous to trade. And of course for those of us interested in shorter moves the book is a complete waste. Why didn't Merriman look at the the 2 or 3 days around the full moon or new moon? Again there would be limited data sets but maybe they signals would have exceed their random possiblity. Anyone who who can make a strong statistical argument that you can use these numbers should sound out. It's not that I want to criticise Merriman as I think he is well intentioned but I question his approach. While I was happy to spend the money I think others should hold off unless the price is signicantly lowered. You would be better of buying Merriman's software and then finetuning what you're looking for. There's not enough commentary or insight to make it worthwhile. But if you want to see an attempt to apply astrology to swing trades and understand the difficulty in doing so then check it out. Ultimately you get what you pay for in life. I assume Merriman wants you topay for his market timing services which is why he hobbles the parameters for this book. Ultimately I wished I had bought Volume 1 of the series which just focuses on longer cycles without the astrology. In any event I will probably buy it just to give him some more money for his efforts. Be careful though because his newer edition is not the one currently listed for sale on Amazon.

Key Short-Term Trading Reversal Dates Pinpointed by Merriman

This book is Merriman's fourth book in a series of comprehensive volumes in the Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing series:
Volume I. Cycles and Patterns in Indexes
Volume II. Geocosmic Correlations to Investment Cycles
Volume III. Geocosmic Correlations to Trading Cycles
Volume IV. Solar/Lunar Correlations to Short-Term Trading Reversals
Volume V. Technical Tools and Trading Cycles (not yet completed)
As is the case with his previous volumes II and III, the reader unfamiliar with astrology will have difficulty in understanding the book. Many of the astrological terms are neither clearly defined, nor explained as to their importance. Those readers familiar with astrology will have no such problems. Readers unfamiliar with astrology and the financial markets, should first read Merriman's 60-page basic primer "Basic Principles of Geocosmic Studies for Financial Market Timing."
Volume IV is a 241-page paperback (8.5" x 11"). Very few researchers and market analysts have the stamina, knowledge, time, and skill to write one ground-breaking book on the markets. Merriman has accomplished that feat four times over, and he is not done yet, with a fifth volume underway.
As I expected, Merriman has produced exhaustive research on the correlation of geocosmic signatures with high and low points in three equities markets. The book's hypothesis is that short-term traders can take advantage of specific reversal dates during the year that can be identified by using specific solar/lunar combinations. Most researchers who have found statistically valid correlations of data to stock prices that can be used for profitable trading, tend to keep it to themselves, and not share it with the public. Merriman has taken the opposite road and shares his years of research with all of us. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us (short-term traders) to give his findings serious consideration. Any edge that we can get in the markets is something that should be examined and put to the test.
Merriman's reviews 60 years of DJIA price data coupled with all the Sun-Moon combinations. He also reviews similar combinations with almost two decades of data for the Nasdaq composite and the Japanese Nikkei index. He focuses on determining the important reversal dates ( one or three day time bands a few times a year) - 4% or more changes in value -- for specific Sun-Moon combinations. Traders can get ready to act on these reversal points with minimal risk. Traders who use the QQQs, SPYs, and DIAs, as well as futures and options can benefit from Merriman's identification of these timeframes.
Merriman found that certain lunar cycles and certain Sun-Moon signs correlate consistently with tradable highs and lows in the financial markets, and identifies them. At the end of the book, Merriman has a chapter devoted to a short-term trading methodology that clearly spells out the 16 steps required to take advantage of the key reversal dates. He covers a few intraday technical indicators with his 16-step methodology, and then shows a detailed example.

General web services, little on finance specifics

Given the specificity of the title I had expected to see financial web services standards covered, as well as regulatory impact of Sarbanes Oaxley and other measures. But there was little of that. What is there instead is a fairly high level walkthrough of web services standards that is reasonable well written.

This book acts as a field guide of sorts, illuminating a path but not providing enough depth to serve as a guide for implementation. Illustrations were under-used and the small amounts of code that were provided weren't given much in the way of annotation.

minimise bandwidth

Watters suggests that developers should build applications that use relatively less CPU and relatively more bandwidth, to keep the network busy. He gives an example where a task takes 10 minutes to compute 1Gb of data and then takes 1 second to transmit it. So that CPU only uses its network for 1 second out of 600 seconds. He sees this as undesirable.

On the contrary. The example shows an excellent optimisation of computation versus bandwidth. You WANT this situation. Also, if you are coding that application, and you can change it so that out of every 10 minutes of computation, it takes only 0.5 seconds to transmit that data, then you should do so. That is an improvement.

In the example cited, the network is only using 0.16% of its capacity. "Idleness of 99.84% is not effective resource utilisation". He is quite correct about that. But wrong to suggest that therefore there is something wrong with that application. Rather, this lets many other computers, running instances of this application or other applications, share the network. In fact, purely from the vantage point of this application, it is good, because it helps the application scale to many instances of it on the same network.

Plus, there is also the issue of latency. Even if the application puts out data at 1Gb/s, that data takes time to reach its destination. Even at the speed of light, this gives rise to times that are often long compared to those times for onboard computation on modern CPUs. Notice also that in many realistic cases, the data has to pass through switches and routers. Adds to the latency. Furthermore, the application would typically expect a reply from where ever it is sending the data so. More delays.

Watters gives his example in the context of quoting George Gilder's law about bandwidth tripling every year. Gilder is famous for saying this, and also saying that bandwidth is effectively free and infinite (or words to that effect). But this is often misunderstood by others, who ignore latency.

All this goes to the core of the book. Web Services are fundamentally a distributed computation, often on machines at different companies, possibly separated by large distances. If you use this book to design a Web Service, it still behooves you to minimise the sizes of packets going on the net, between the different parties. And also to minimise the occasions (frequencies) on which these packets need to be sent. Both factors reduce the overall bandwidth usage and latency. Helps the scaling of your application.

Practical approach to developing Web Services

Dr. Watters takes a practical approach at developing Web Services application - rather than theoretical conceptual approach to the topic. He approached the topic from both the J2EE and .NET programmer's point of view, and provides examples throughout the text that demonstrates both A) strengths and weaknesses of each platform for developing Web services, B) broad and yet finance-industry focused application of Web services. Examples demonstrated throughout the text are easy to follow and relate to. One example that is referred to often in the text related to checking balance of a band account and a more complicated stock trading application which the author used to demonstrate WDSL and UDDI examples.

I had read a number of books on SOA and Web services in general, but I found the "how-to" approach of this book very helpful. Not that the author does not cover the basics of Web services, but he does so with demonstrating the concepts thru code samples and workable programs throughout the chapters. Background information on how and why Web services fit into the finance industry start the book - followed by an introduction to why the current systems such as CORBA and various MOM's are not doing the job right now. He follows up with the basics of data representation: XML, DTD and XML Schema. These topics are covered very briefly, and can be skipped over.

Messaging with SOAP is an essential part of Web services. All other protocols and layers rest atop of SOAP - and messaging. Two subtopics are worth highlighting: SOAP binding with HTTP and the available software packages in .NET and Java. Later in the text, the author discusses other SOAP binding protocols such as SMTP, POP, JavaMail and IMAP. WSDL is needed to define the endpoints that represent services. Examples from the SOAP chapter are expanded to take into account WSDL and UDDI, in the chapter that follows.

Security is an important topic and much more so in the finance industry. Authentication, Authorization, Secrecy and trust are some of the requirements that Web services security protocols need to fulfill. The problem with security standard is that there are too many of them: 7 protocols that cover the security aspects of Web services to be exact. The author covers these topics as they pertain to the finance industry and follows each discussion with the appropriate example.

In about 200 or so pages, Paul covers the topic of Web services quite well. His examples are applicable to the finance industry and are very easy to follow. Even if you have read other books on Wed services, I highly recommend this book to you as it will make a very good edition to your book collection.
