Good teachings on money and spirituality

For me this book was very resonant. The author was a financially successful person in the world who was simultaneously seeking a spiritual path and for a time, put aside the material world. It is important for all of us spiritual seekers to find that balance between money and spirituality. Those who see that money, although important, is only a REFLECTION of one's inner worth, and well being, are always going to be financially secure and even better, emotionally secure. These people do not sacrifice people on the altar of security, knowing that security is found within.
As we go down the path of life, it is always important to mind that although financial security is a good thing, it is not the most important thing. Wealth is truly found in relationships with those we love, and comfort and security in ourselves. As soon as this is found, security financially is no longer a matter...some are addicted to this money making (and stealing from those they love) and are in essence, material addicts. So sad.
This book is helpful for all of us on our paths.

What an empowering book!

I loved this book. It is a wonderful and practical guide to ethical living and fiscal sobriety. I especially like how the author blends spiritual and historical analysis with clear directions on how to personally discover where you are at with money and how to clean up your act. Fascinating and helpful!

Mayuri has a great understanding of finances but she also brings a beautiful spiritual consciousness to money that is refreshing and welcome.

I totally enjoyed this book and have implemented her suggestions into how I deal with money.

Her insights have changed the way I think and feel about my finances and how to navigate myself in that important part of my life.

Grand book, totally recommend it.

Fantastic book.

A great look into fascism not just in Italy and Germany in the 1930's-40's. Kallis's research was very thorough and it shows in this book. Great for anyone wanting to learn more about fascism in its entirety. KCCO.

Toby Segaran is a software developer and manager at Genstruct, a computational systems biology company. This is the first time I've actually taken the time to write out a review. I'm sure this book was awesome when it first came out, it is clear, concise and has a nice follow-along structure. However, it has become outdated and it is riddled with either old syntax and errors. I have gotten past most of that though. The worst part is probably that the files that are used in some of the examples are hosted on the authors blog and have been taken down. If he can't be bothered to continue hosting old files for people who may buy the book (or point us to somewhere to get them) we shouldn't be bothered to buy it.

Good - If you know what you're getting

Let me start with pointing out what this book does well:

- The book gives a good survey of common Machine Learning algorithms. It explains what kind of problems these algorithms are good for. That's perfect for someone who wants to get a quick overview and has no background in Machine Learning.
- The book is very easy to understand. The writing style is very casual. Even people without formal training in Computer Science should have no problem. The only thing that's required is basic programming knowledge, preferably in Python.
- Among all of the theoretical ML books out there it's refreshing to find a book that applies the algorithms to real-world problems.

Now the negative points. The following are not necessarily negatives for everyone, as it really depends on what you were looking for in this book. However, I was expecting a bit more, and was disappointed about the following:

- Half of the books is code. I just don't see the point in printing full listing of Python code. Why not give shorter pseudocode and make the Python code available on the website? The long code listings only obfuscate the ideas instead of demonstrating how to apply them. If you take away the code listings there are maybe 150 pages of "real" content left.
- The very casual and easy-to-understand style comes at a price. The book does not go into the mathematical details of any of the algorithms. I understand that this wasn't the books intention to begin with, but I would argue that some mathematical background is necessary in order to efficiently apply complex algorithms. If you want to apply the algorithms presented in the book to slightly different or more complex problems, or wish to understand the advantages/disadvantages of each of the algorithms you'll have to know the basic math behind them.
- The algorithms are very poorly implemented. Looking at some of the code makes me cringe. While the code in the book may work for "Building a search engine" for a few thousand pages, or optimizing problems with a handful of variables, it certainly won't work for more interesting problems that involve real-world data, which is orders of magnitude larger. And the real-world scale is where these algorithms actually become interesting. The code in this book will only work for small examples where efficiency play no role. I understand the author wanted to keep the code as simple as possible, but in my opinion a few notes about how algorithms can be made more efficient would have been necessary. I can see many people trying to apply these algorithms to their real-world data, and getting stuck because of the poor implementation.

Outdates, Code no longer works

I would not recommend anyone buying this book. The examples are outdated, based on sites that don't even exist anymore. The list of errata is huge (and doesn't even include all the errata I found).

Finally, the the author references old versions of python libraries that no longer 'work as advertised', or that have changed so radically that the example code will not even run - you'll be spending hours just figuring out how to update the code to be compatible with newer versions of the libraries referenced in the book. That in itself is a frustrating experience.

My advice is, get another book for Python or ML if that's what you're looking for and don't waste your time with this one.

The Russian Andrey Tarkovsky (1932-1986) is one of the greatest directors in film history. Here Italian photographer Chiaramonte and Tarkovsky's son mount a selection of color Polaroids the filmmaker took from 1979 to 1984 of his home, family, and friends in Russia and of places he visited in Italy. His father, Arseny, was a distinguished poet, and judging from the notebook extracts accompanying the pictures, Tarkovsky was no mean poet himself. Like his father, he intuited a holy eternity. Those windows into eternity, the icons of the Orthodox Church, influenced his visual style (his Andrei Rublev commemorates the greatest icon painter), and these photos, suffused by the ochre light of late afternoon and so powerfully composed that they argue that supreme artistic visualization was second nature to Tarkovsky, look so timeless and enduring that they inspire worshipful awe. Like some of the imagery of The Mirror, the Tarkovsky film these pictures most resemble, some of them tax and frustrate legibility. Always, they affirm a line of Arseny Tarkovsky's, "We are all immortal." Ray Olson

About the Author
Giovanni Chiaramonte is a distinguished Italian photographer. His images center around the relationship between place and destiny in Western civilization, a theme he shares with Andrey Tarkovsky.

Andrey Tarkovsky was a Russian director, writer and actor. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers of the Soviet era in Russia and one of the greatest in movie history. Among his films are Solaris, Mirror, Stalker, and Nosalghia. He died in 1986.

Tonino Guerra's narrative talents have provided screenplays for film directors as diverse as Theo Angelopoulos, Michaelangelo Antonioni, Vittorio De Sica, Frederico Fellini and the Taviani brothers, as well as Andrey Tarkovsky.

Ingmar Bergman is quoted as saying that '..for me, Tarkovsky is the greatest filmmaker' -- not bad, considering that the source is numbered among the most respected directors in the history of cinema. Tarkovsky made a 'scant' 7 films over the course of his career -- but each one of them is outstanding. His philosophy of art and spirituality pervades all of his work -- including the incredible photographs reproduced in this thoughtfully assembled, lovingly printed volume.

Tarkovsky's son, along with Tonino Guerro (a close friend and collaborator of the filmmaker) and Giovanni Chiaramonte (a wonderful Italian photographer whose comments at the end of the book show that he shared a great deal of Tarkovsky's spirit and concerns) have put together this collection -- and I have no doubt that it will not only be treasured by those who are already admirers of the director, but that it will serve as a fitting introduction to those who have as yet missed out on him.

The strength, depth of spirituality, transcendent beauty and wisdom contained in and conveyed by the images and thoughts here are timeless. One of the driving forces in Tarkovsky's work was to 'stop time' so that the viewer might better understand not only the events depicted in his images, but also, upon reflection, better view his own soul, personality and place in the scheme of things. There are many photographs in this book that have that very time-stopping effect.

This is a collection that I will treasure -- I can't recommend it highly enough.

Polaroids From One Of The Greatest Filmmakers To Have Lived

If anyone remembers polaroid pictures from back in the day, it's truly amazing that Tarkovsky captured the beautiful & haunting images he did. This collection gives the world a postmortem gift from one of the most important filmmakers/artists that has ever graced this earth. We should all give thanks to his son, Andrey A. Tarkovsky, for publishing this collection of pictures and letting us all see these images of mysterious and poetic beauty.

Nostalgic, Evocative Images: Tarovsky's Polaroids

Tarovsky's polaroid photos, many of them landscapes, are evocative and nostalgic, while exhibiting a style of composition that is fresh, inventive, and thoughtful. He manages all this without the need for costly equipment, using only inexpensive polaroid cameras. The photos made me feel as though I had been there and seen his subjects for myself--although I've never been to Russia. Or perhaps Tarovsky's images simply have the power to evoke nostalgic longings in us, without being able to identify where they come from.

Highly recommended.

About the Author

Sylvia Rockwell is an internationally recognized educator with more than 30 years of experience in a variety of educational settings, including self-contained general and special education classrooms, resource programs, inclusion settings, special day school programs, and a therapeutic educational wilderness program. She has taught all grade levels from first grade through graduate school. She earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education at the University of West Florida. Her master's degree and PhD were earned at the University of South Florida, where she was inducted into Pi Kappa Pi.

She is a former teacher of the year for Hunsinger School in Clearwater, Florida, and was awarded the Professional Educator Award from the International Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders. She has 20 years of experience in developing workshops and presentations for local, state, national, and international audiences. In addition to these accomplishments, Rockwell has authored numerous articles and books on the topics of classroom management, facilitating resilience, group development, and teaching diverse and at-risk students. Good book for ALL educators

I had to read this for a class, but it's still a great book! It's up there next to Harry Wongs "The First Days of School." Harry will get you through your first year, this book will help you understand WHY children behave the way they do and how we can adjust our own thinking to help them behave appropriately.
