Amazing book. It provides a well documented case for UFO sittings in general. It is not our imagination. Ms. Wallace has clearly shown that our government does not always give us factual feedback. If you are a fan of UFO sightings as well as government cover-ups and conspiracies, you will enjoy this book.

I tend to say it is an easy read about the author’s ongoing desire to solve a mystery in our skies. From her beginnings on her grandmother’s porch watching the sky for any unusual movement, to viewing a UFO first hand, to learning of possible family involvement in a secret operation, to researching government’s role in the ongoing question of evidence of extraterrestrials, this book takes you on an interesting journey that will make you question your thoughts.

I liked this book. It is an excellent description, with witness interviews, of the 1941 crash in Missouri of an unusual aircraft. Hopefully there will be follow up edition.

Very interesting. Not exactly what I expected, it's a scholarly examination of the way that language is used at the gaming table. Being a fan of linguistics, this was interesting, but it's not going to help me create better narrative at my table.

An Excellent First Step toward a New View on the TRPG

By far the most innovative scholastic treatment of the Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TRPG) I've read to date, Creation clearly delineates a new cross-discipline view for future research and debate on narrative and its role in the TRPG. While by necessity Cover reiterates some commonly held truisms in the subject, at no point does this detract from the work, either for a student of rhetoric, or for the lay person.

The only reason this did not receive a fifth star was because of its relatively narrow focus, specifically on Dungeons & Dragons as a flagship TRPG. While it is in effect the quintessential representative of the genre, the effort and tremendous scholarship that went into the production of this book shows to me that the author has abundant potential and talent, and I feel as a personal opinion that the rather tight focus on that one game system in this text does her conclusions and her capabilities something of an injustice.

Whether you are simply an interested person, a player or GM of a TRPG, or a researcher looking seriously into the narrative underpinnings that hold together all of our creatively supported interactions from make-believe games as children to modern computer RPG's and MMORPG's, Cover's insights and excellently researched syntheses prove both engaging to read and provocative in thought. I look forward eagerly to any pursuant texts in the same vein.

I like it, however I do not feel it is ...

I like it, however I do not feel it is as thoroughly researched as say a contemporary like Peterson. Clearly the angle of the writing is far different, however there were some historical inaccuracies (or omissions). For instance, it is suggested that Arneson was very influenced by Tolkien's work for his Blackmoor game. This may have been (and probably was) the case, however this text fails to acknowledge the enormous influence that Chainmail (by Gygax) had on Arneson's initial Blackmoor concept. Now, Chainmail, was clearly influenced by Tolkien's work!

Having said that, it is easy-to-read, and well-written. It offers a notable contribution to TRPG studies, and I am currently referencing it for a master's thesis.

About the Author
Brian Brunckhorst entered the laundry business when he and his wife purchased their first laundromat, Advantage Laundry, in 2003. Eight years later, Brian is an industry veteran dedicated to teaching other coin laundry entrepreneurs best practices and strategies to improve operations through his industry resources, www.laundromatinsider.org, and www.buyalaundromat.com. Brunckhorst and his wife currently own and manage Advantage Laundry's four San Francisco Bay area locations. Prior to entering the laundry business, Brunckhorst leveraged his technical skills working as an engineer at a variety of high-tech companies in Silicon Valley. Using his technical knowledge to his advantage, Brunckhorst has incorporated equipment with controls that enable him to effectively run his stores remotely. In addition to a more flexible schedule, these controls allow him to diagnose and deal with equipment issues before they become problems, accurately measure machine generated revenue and monitor store traffic and coin boxes for added security. Brunckhorst is widely respected as a coin laundry expert and is very active in the Coin Laundry Association (CLA). He was a featured panelist at the semi-annual Clean Show tradeshow, was elected to the board of directors of the Golden State Coin Laundry Association and presented the "Design to Sell" seminar at the CLA's 2010 Educational Conference in Baltimore, MD. Want tips on due diligence & valuation of laundromats? You won't find much here...

I purchased this item recently since a colleague of mine has asked me to co-invest in a couple of potential laundromat transactions. This book is well-written and covers a lot of relevant topics (e.g., selecting equipment, store layouts). However, for a book that claims to be about the buying and owning of laundromats, there is very little information provided relative to the buying process.

If you are looking for information about how to analyze a potential laundromat acquisition, such as typical due diligence, how to come up with a valuation, etc... you will not find that information in this book. Instead, you are directed to the author's web page where you can allegedly purchase a separate product that covers that topic. (However, as of the date of this writing, the link to that product on his web page is disabled so there is no way to purchase it).

With so little useful information regarding due diligence or valuation, I find this book to be only somewhat useful overall, hence the 3-star rating. And I was disappointed to learn that the book directs you to buy yet another product from the author to get basic information about buying a laundromat - information that, I'm sure, many readers would expect to find within the book.

This book is a good introduction. It's a little expensive, but any book is worth it if you are investing in a Laundromat. I think he doesnt get into too much depth b/c he wants you to want to buy his "Own a Laundromat Teleseminar CD set" for $300.

a good choice

I've just recently became a laundromat owner and still found this book very helpful, I liked his insights on how to find the best deal on new equipments and store layout.

Come to think of it, if I would have read this before we bought our store, we could have done better on the valuation of the store and paid the seller less. I would recommand this to all prospective laundromat buyers as this book offers a great blue print for things you need to know and watch out for; for existing laundromat owners, it never hurts to find out how others are (or will be) running the business...

I waited a long time before reviewing this book because the experience is so visceral/powerful/epiphanic that I hesitate to say anything because I know I cannot do it justice. Before my introduction to DFW, I had no favorite author. Before reading IJ, I had no favorite book. I've always thought that limiting myself to one favorite book or author is impossible but no one before or since have spoken to me as he has.

The book has 3 major sections:
Hal and his friends attend Enfield Tennis Academy. The school is run by Hal's mom and it is a prestigious learning center both scholastically as well as for tennis. The school regularly funnels their attendants to high ranked colleges which eventually lead to places in the "show". Hal and his friends are smart, they work hard, are overly stressed and dabble in drugs.

Hal is part of the Incandenza Family which consists of their father who blew his head off in the microwave. Mother who runs the school and Hal's deformed but loved younger brother that follows him around. Previous to his death the father created an entertainment that was so powerful that it leaves people unable to stop watching which causes their death.

Now we also have Les Assassins des Fauteuils Rollents who are french Canadian separatists They are seeking the video in order to decimate the U.S. population.

If this isn't enough we also have the Ennet House Recovery program which is on the same property as the tennis academy. We get an introduction to life in a 12 step program for recovery because we get a lot of the work drone on the academy by these recovering residents.

While the summary I'm giving is very general. The magic is that while reading in each section the book becomes more understandable. IJ requires paying attn. There are footnotes after footnotes and not reading the footnotes will mean you lose a significant part of the story.

My outline is very general I will refrain from talking about the model that was Madame Pyschosis, the various convoluted relathionships in the Incandenza family. I would focus more on what I enjoy.

I've been someone who has dealt with addiction issues and the pieces regarding Ennet HOuse Recovery ring true for me and his quirky but detailed description of the meetings are spot on.

Finally DFW converges all these things into a final scene. While not all of it are resolved we see enough of it to gather how the future will unfold.

This description is haphazard but the join is actually in the reading of the book. DFW's prose is like none other. He is a genius of word play, grammar play, and just sliding in the perfect sentence.

There's a lot of footnotes and I strongly suggest you read all of them. They are not just tangential information but they also add to our knowledge of events/characters.

I rarely read a book twice. IJ I read twice and likely will re read again. He speaks to me in a way that I'm sure is sui generis. As a kid looking for a mentor to write in a highly literate way, who talks about things I'm interested in: depression, addiction: family. It just hit me at the write time to be that special something.While I won't go so far as to say IJ is my religion (creepy!) I definitely come away with some teachings that I can implement into my life.

The films UN CHIEN ANDALOU, L'AGE D'OR, and VIVA LA MUERTE are the magna opera of surrealism.

INFINITE JEST (1996) by David Foster Wallace is the magnum opus of American hipsterism.

What is a "hipster," you ask? A hipster is one who has what Hegel described as an "unhappy consciousness": He is a self that is at variance with itself.

Anyone who has spent any time in academia will instantly recognize Wallace's pedigree upon opening this book. Wallace was an academic writer. Unhappily, all connotations of "academic" are intentional. That is to say, the book is both fantastically banal and seems to have been composed, disconsolately and mechanistically, in a registrar's office. It is not arbitrary that the narrative begins in the Department of Admissions of a tennis college. The language here recalls the world of registration and withdrawal forms and the world of classrooms where works such as this are spawned, dissected, and pickled -- the world of the academic industry.

Wallace: "Matriculations, gender quotas, recruiting, financial aid, room-assignments, mealtimes, rankings, class v. drill schedules, prorector-hiring... It's all the sort of thing that's uninteresting unless you're the one responsible..." [451].

I wonder if anyone besides Wallace has ever found these things interesting.

Since no one else has taken the trouble to encapsulate the narrative, permit me to attempt to do so here. The novel seems to have two diegetic threads and a meta-narrative. The first thread concerns the incandescent descent of Hal Incandenza, teenager and tennis student, into drug addiction. (Well, no, it isn't quite incandescent, not quite luciferous, at all, but I liked the way that sounded.) The second outlines the shaky recovery of Don Gately, criminal, from Demerol. The "woof," I imagine, details the efforts of a cabal of Quebecois terrorists to inject a death-inducing motion picture of the same title as this book into the American bloodstream. All of this takes place in a soupy, fuzzy future in which Mexico and Canada have been relegated to satellites of the onanistic "Organization of North American Nations." Predictably, and much like NAFTA, America is at the epicenter of this reconfiguration.

It is hard to care about any of this. If Wallace had written fluidly, things would have been otherwise. It is not that the book is complex, nor that its prose is burnished (if only it were!). The problem is much different: The sentences are so awkwardly articulated and turgid that the language is nearly unreadable. You wish that someone would fluidify the congested prose while struggling with the irritation and boredom that weave their way through you.

There is literary litter everywhere. No, "nauseous" does not mean "nauseated." No, "presently" does not mean "at present." Such faults are mere peccadilloes, however, especially when one considers the clunkiness of Wallace's language. A few examples:

1.) "The unAmerican guys chase Lenz and then stop across the car facing him for a second and then get furious again and chase him" [610]. I am having a hard time visualizing this scene.

2.) "Avril Incandenza is the sort of tall beautiful woman who wasn't ever quite world-class, shiny-magazine beautiful, but who early on hit a certain pretty high point on the beauty scale and has stayed right at that point as she ages and lots of other beautiful women age too and get less beautiful" [766]. It would take more effort to edit this see-Spot-run sentence than it did, I suspect, to write it.

3.) "The puppet-film is reminiscent enough of the late Himself that just about the only more depressing thing to play attention to or think about would be advertising and the repercussions of O.N.A.N.ite Reconfiguration for the U.S. advertising industry" [411]. This is a particularly representative example of Wallace's heavy, cluttered style -- a sentence larded with substantives.

4.) "So after the incident with the flaming cat from hell and before Halloween Lenz had moved on and up to the Browning X444 Serrated he even had a shoulder-holster for, from his previous life Out There" [545]. So... Lenz moves "on and up" to a knife... "from" his previous life? If this is a sentence, it is the ugliest I've yet read.

To say such a thing would be to say too little. Nearly every sentence is overpoweringly ugly and repellently clumsy. Not a single sentence--not one--is beautiful, defamiliarizing, or engaging. I am sorry to write this, but INFINITE JEST is a joylessly, zestlessly, toxically written book and the poisonous fruit of academic bureaucracy.

A few valedictory words: It would be tasteless--raffish, even--to malign the literary estate of a recent suicide. Wallace was nothing if not intelligent, and his death is a real loss. Had he lived longer, he might have left us books that impress and delight. Let me advise the reader to avoid this plasticized piece of academic flotsam and pick up and at instead BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN, his true gift to the afterlife and the afterdeath.

Why Doesn't This Novel Have a Plot?

The first 80 or so pages seem mainly to be seperate, unrelated, historical episodes or facts. I stopped because I saw no hint that a tradional-style plot would ever develop. I might start again if someone let me know how many more pages it takes for that to happen.

If you like books written by this author you will like this book too, because it is more of the same.
This time it starts with a bit of tension because Melanie is alone hiking when she realizes she is being followed by a creep.
When he comes to her, she gets saved by the werebears and what happens next when she wakes up in their cave is hot and steamy

Hot and Sexy Read!

Melanie just turned twenty-five, and to celebrate she goes backpacking. She realizes she is being followed and shelter is miles away. She is attacked by a man that has been staalking her and saved by three grizzly bears. She hits her head, and when she comes to she is in a cave. When a bear changes into a man she is shocked. Before long she is mated to three men. Did I mention that the men are brothers?

There were two stories following this one and I loved them all!

An okay read.

I bought this book as it was free. I plan to give a honest review. This book is SUPER short but well written. It has no grammar mistakes and no spelling ones. It has some sex scenes but nothing over the top and most seem weird. Best word to describe it. Leaves you scratching your head thinking can that me done? Then if you think it can .. try it out .. anyways ..

This would be a great story if it was not so short or rushed but it has earned the 3 stars for hotness (if you can figure out how to do just that 3some described in the book.

I expected much more

I can't help but feel the last edit (at least for the Kindle) was poorly planned, supervised or perhaps rushed.

For example, Chapter 20's content is listed in the following order.... Ocular emergencies (True emergencies - therapy should be instituted within minutes)..... Urgent case: to be seen within the hour .....Urgent case: to be seen the same day.... Priority case: to be seen within days.... but the actual order places the section 'urgent case: to be seen within the hour' behind priority cases.

I found it frustrating that there was no way to match page numbers to Kindle pages.

But not all problems can be blamed on having a Kindle edition....

Throughout the text, the quality of the writing was inconsistent.

Telling your reader-students, the majority of whom are new to the field, go find answers elsewhere is not helpful..... (from Chapter 1 "Answers to some of the questions at the end of each chapter may be found in other parts of this book or, in some cases, only in other sources."

Also not helpful: providing photo illustrations & review questions for conditions or disorders that are not explained in the book. (vernal conjunctivitis, for example) At least include a definition in the glossary.

This book is very informative and there are lots of illustrations along the way. However, the layout and verbiage is not for beginners. The chapters are laid out in a confusing way. The authors jump from one subject to the next and it's quite hard to follow. Bring a glass of water with you when you read this book, it's dry!!

Bought this bout one year for more on the job knowledge etc. I am going to be taking the JCAHPO Certification test soon and luckily this text is accepted as a "at home study guide". Good guidelines but if you want quick access to "quiz" questions, use the online website that comes with purchasing this book. Much much easier to find what you're looking for. Good Luck!
