From Library Journal
This insider's account of life within the cult of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh is curiously unsatisfying. Filled with sex, scandal, and tragedy, it reads well, but one never gets a feeling for either the people running the movement or for those who participated in it. Milne, who spent years as an aide and bodyguard to Bhagwan, never addresses the question of motivation: Why did thousands of educated Westerners throw away years of their lives, endure privation and disease, and ultimately beggar themselves in the service (worship?) of an Indian guru? Nor does he satisfactorily explain why he sacrificed a promising career in osteopathy to become a disciple of a man who, if he had anything intelligent to say, has been badly served by this book. For only the most inclusive collections. D. Stephen Rockwood, Mount Saint Mary's Coll., Emmitsburg, Md.

Misreadings
By A Customer
A review can say so much more about the reviewer than the book in question. The Library Journal review wonders how people could "throw away" years of their lives, etc., to follow such a guru--and criticizes Milne for failing to explain. In fact, he does explain the attraction: it was experiential; living in the presence of Rajneesh and in the company of other followers proved more powerful and enlightening--felt better--than life on the outside. Therapists and body workers found their practices enhanced by Rajneesh, not merely his "teachings" but by their own transformation, mind-body-spirit, catalyzed by Rajneesh. Milne also points out that it is not unusual for people in mass movements or utopian communities based on "love" to experience the high bliss of community.
Readers seem to expect books by former Rajneeshees all to be sociological studies in cultism as well as expose's of crime & intrigue replete with interviews and testimonials. Sometimes the best source of information is one's own experience; that can be enough for one book to digest. Rajneesh drew people to his writings as well as to his meditations...and ultimately, in many cases, to his ashrams. People were 'hit' on many levels. The question posed by the Library Journal review--why so many normal people would throw away so much to follow Rajneesh--implies that a flaw in their collective character caused the phenomenon, when the cause is far more normal and common: people seeking 'truth' who make the mistake of diminishing their selves while elevating someone else to the status of hero-god. That phenonenon didn't stop with Bhagwan. And memoirs about that experience will probably continue to be ambivalent because of the very powerful, in many cases transformative, experiences people have vis a vis the brainwash and surrender of identity. The experience did not cost Milne, a young man at the time, his career as an osteopath. For all the lessons learned, it seemed to have enhanced it.

Objective Viewpoint
By Zulu Warrior
I read the book cover to cover. I never wanted to because I used to be a doe-eyed follower of Bhagwan. Not in the literal sense, I own perhaps 70 books. I thought the book was going to be an unmitigated attack on Bhagwan. Instead, Milne provides a rather insightful look.

The fact that he was Bhagwan's bodyguard gave him access to every priveledge known to man. Milne allows the reader to put themselves in his shoes. Eventually, the women leaders of Oregon Ashram sought power and ostracized Milne. And Milne was neverthess, loyal to the core. He felt that what he was doing still mattered, driving a backhoe in 30 degree weather 12 hours a day with little sleep or sustanance. And a Phd. to boot.

Milne's account is a simple honest testimony to what happened. And he doesn't point fingers or lay blame at Bhagwan. He realizes the decisions that he made were made by himself. And he benefitted from many of these decisions, but also fell victim to the Ashram which took on a life of its own. And he became Bhagwan's alleged infamous Judas.

In the book you would think that he would be somewhere bitter and resentful. There is none. That is the beauty in the book. And perhaps, that is part of the beauty that Milne experience prior to Bhagwan's downfall.

A must read for anyone interested in the existentiatlist's existentialist. I no longer consider Bhagwan to be the Alpha and Omega of life's issues. Milne helped me break free from my loyalty. I still greatly respect Bhagwan for his literature. But possibly, it ends there. Bhagwan, according to Milne, became just a shell of what he used to be. And that is where he failed. Thanks to modern day Valium and Nitrous Oxide, one of the greatest minds became incapacitated.

RAJNEESH'S FORMER PERSONAL BODYGUARD LOOKS BACK AT THE MAN AND HIS MOVEMENT
By Steven H Propp
The Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain; 1931-1990; he changed his name to "Osho" shortly before his death) was a controversial Indian spiritual teacher with an international following. His teachings on Tantra and sexuality earned him the name "the sex guru" in the mass media; he moved his ashram from India to Oregon in 1981, where they had substantial conflicts with the local community (including a criminal food contamination attack on Oregon residents ordered by the ashram leaders); he was deported in 1985 [see Bhagwan: Twelve Days That Shook the World], and finally settled in India again, where he died. His teachings continue to be promoted by the Osho International Meditation Resort. His daily lectures were recorded for many years, and turned into books such as I Am the Gate: The Meaning of Initiation and Discipleship, Book of the Secrets Three, Philosophia Perennis Volume 2, etc.

Other books about him include Dying for Enlightenment: Living with Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, Ultimate Game: The Rise and Fall of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, The Promise of Paradise, The Quest for Total Bliss, The Golden Guru, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1986 book, "This book is the story of my attraction to, involvement with, and final separation from a particularly sensational Indian guru, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. It is not intended to be some kind of business manager's objective report: it is an insider's view---a view from the heart---of the intimate processes that act upon disciples in their love affair with their spiritual leader... It is a story full of paradox, of contradictions, a story of both deceit and beatitude. It is a story of a man and an organisation that changed so dramatically from its earlier origins as to be almost beyond recognition... Whilst it is obviously impossible to remember word for word conversations held thirteen years ago, I endeavor to stay faithful to their spirit... I have excluded all ... gossip except where I heard it first-hand at the time I write about." (Pg. 15, 17-18)

He notes, "[Bhagwan] was a voracious reader, sometimes getting through ten or fifteen books a day, and liked to keep himself bang up to date with the world literary scene." (Pg. 59) But later, "In Poona he had read ten or fifteen books a day, and now he watched videos just as avidly. It was the fulltime job of three sannyasis to make sure he had a constant supply of videos. His favourite films were George C. Scott's Patton, and The Ten Commandments." (Pg. 248)

He recalls, "Bhagwan gradually began to acquire for use the characteristics of a supernatural being...there was still something beyond the usual range of abilities. He did have paranormal powers, though not perhaps in the measure he claimed or quite in the way it seemed in those enchanted early days when we felt he could do no wrong." (Pg. 71-72) He explains, "Bhagwan set a lot of store by the teachings of Gurdjieff ... Gurdjieff was the main role model for Bhagwan who... had read all Gurdjieff's works and the commentaries both in the original and in the version written by Ouspensky. In particular Bhagwan liked the way Gurdjieff had rebelled against authority and kept testing the strength of his disciples' faith." (Pg. 100) Later, he notes, "Krishnamurti [was] the only person Bhagwan had ever acknowledged as an equal. Krishnamurti had no time for Bhagwan, and particularly objected to the use of the word 'Bhagwan'..." (Pg. 275) He adds, "When Krishnamurti called Bhagwan a criminal, I suspect he was ... referring to his misuse of hypnosis and psychic powers." (Pg. 286)

He notes, "Many people have asked me how a sensible, independent person could be mesmerized by someone like Bhagwan. The answer, as many sannyasis would agree, is that once you had been affected by his energy and experienced the sensation of being touched by it, you knew that there was nothing like it, no bliss to compare with it. Once you had experienced it, you had to go back for more, to try and regain that feeling of harmony and being at one with the universe... Bhagwan's touch would be just as addictive as the strongest drug." (Pg. 179)

But later, "What had begun as the dawn of a new age, a glorious spiritual movement, already had the makings of a fascist nightmare. All my dreams of showing people how to live in love and harmony seemed to be vanishing. I was doing nothing more than working myself into a state of nervous exhaustion... We were being used as slaves under the guise of spiritual surrender." (Pg. 201) He adds, "Bhagwan himself was quite open about the fact that the primary purpose of the ranch [in Oregon] was to make money, and said that if ever money-making became a problem, he would abandon his vow of silence." (Pg. 246)

This book will be of keen interest to anyone studying Rajneesh and his movement.

When I was reading “The Forsyte Saga” by John Galsworthy ...
By Pen Million
When I was reading “The Forsyte Saga” by John Galsworthy, I stumbled on this book. It was mentioned in the book where one of the main characters of Forsyte Saga (young Jolyon) was reading this book in French. I had read “Thais” before and, since his other books are “The crime of Sylvestre Bonnard” and “The Gods will have Blood”, I thought the author France specialized in religious and moral fables. I did not want to read religious novels but the title really arosed my curiosity. The book started as if the author was going to tell of religion because a monk appeared. But then as the story goes on, what a corrupt monk he is! He lies, steals, drinks, gambles and womanizes but still, his pupil and story teller of this book respects and worships him. This boy, a son of rotisserie, a working class but educated by this monk is so brain washed. Did the author want to tell how naïve working class is even with education? Was France a genuine cynic? If he was I can digest this book. If not, how can I understand this book? I noticed in “Forsyte Saga”, Young Jolyon’s dog was “Balthasal”, another France’s work.

My View of This Book
By Phil L
I read Helter Skelter in its first edition publishing in the 70's. In the late 70's I also obtained and read Susan's book "Child of Satan, Child of God". I recommend the book if only to read thoughts from one of Manson's most notorious associates and one of the principle participants in the Tate murders.

But what the book represents is less of insight into the mind of a killer and more of an effort to demonstrate to the world that Susan Atkins had now (at the time she wrote this) separated herself from Manson's lethal ideology and recognized that she had made an error "allowing" herself to be controlled by Manson.

What is disappointing though, is that Atkins never (in my feeling) takes full responsibility for her actions during the deadly Manson Family era. I finished the book feeling her words were designed to impress the reader that her participation in the killings were more the direct result of Manson's influence over her, and less of the reality she was a willing participant.

In that sense it appeared she was trying to lay the early ground work for what would become numerous parole board appeals. From early on in their incarcerations, most Manson Family members, now separated from the notorious Charlie and his influence and surrounded by institutional reality, suddenly wanted the world to believe they had changed and deserved a "second chance" with release from prison. This book looks to be written for that specific goal in mind.

The Manson murders continue to fascinate even after all these years. Though they are easily forgotten now after so many decades have faded the memories, they still represent an astounding aberration of human nature in an era in which society was seeming to transform itself from relative orderliness to a complex mix of youthful rebellion, rejection of authority and the overt influence of drugs, "free love" and competing views on the role and motives of government in our lives.

scary, very scary....
By Jimbo
I sincerely hope Miss Atkins is the changed person she claims to be in this book, but frankly, I find it almost impossible to believe anything she says. She has told so many lies over the years about the Tate-LaBianca case, I think it's quite possible that even she doesn't know the truth anymore.
Like the rest of the convicted killers involved in the Tate-LaBianca murders, she cops out by saying she had been brainwashed by Manson and had little control over her actions. I believe Manson knew who had the ability to kill and who didn't, and chose the people who went out to kill seven innocent people very carefully. Although Manson had the ability to capitalize on their weaknesses, the end result was these heartless people CHOSE to do his bidding. They could have gone back and told Charlie no one was home or simply refused his request in the first place.
I simply can't conjure up any sympathy for anyone who is capable of comitting such a heartless act and the thought of someone like that being free to walk among us again is terrifying. Atkins claims she has found god and tells us he has forgiven her. I believe god can forgive anyone for anything if that person is truly remorseful for his or her sins, and if he has forgiven her, then her afterlife is assured. However, she is being held in prison because she comitted a crime against society, and society says she will rot in a jail cell for her unspeakable crimes. It's incredibly obscene for someone like Miss Atkins to place such a high value on her own life, when she had no hesitation whatsoever about taking the life of an eight and half month pregnant woman who pleaded in vain for her life and that of her unborn child.
Seven innocent people are in their graves and they will never get a second chance. The killers deserve the same fate.

Interesting view from Sexy Sadie
By RugbyGirl
I am enthralled with the Mason Family, particularly the minds of the women so I thought this would be a good book to gain insight into the mind of "Sexie Sadie", Susan Atkins. It was an easy read, I zipped right through it in a few days. Basically, it starts with a tiny bit of information on Susan's childhood and journey to San Francisco where she met Charlie. From there, it brushes gently over the details and events that occurred with the Tate/LaBianca murders. The last portion of the book, the majority, is her time in prison and her rebirth through Christianity. The primary focus being her rebirth. She definitely becomes intensely Christian, going into her new baptism, constant quotations from the bible and speaking in tongues. I bought it with hopes that I'd gain insight into her mind and the reasoning for the gruesome acts she committed but none of that was touched on, it is simply a book explaining her acceptance of Jesus Christ as her savior, becoming a child of God. I think that's fine, whatever made her happy, whatever gave her true peace within her tortured soul. If you're interested in reading about each Manson Family member and their take on their experience, then do read this book. I'm glad I did. If you want a detailed account of the crimes, investigation, and trial, read Bugliosi's book. But what the heck, read both, it's an easy read.

New OTHERLAND/OZ story
By Olaf Keith
"The Boy Detective of Oz" is Tad Williams' second OTHERLAND story (following "The Happiest Dead Boy in the World", 2003) that deals with the future adventures of Orlando Gardiner, the eponymous dead boy, who is now the quasi-immortal ranger of the OTHERLAND network. These stories follow the events of the four main OTHERLAND novels, and while no knowledge of the books is strictly necessary, both stories are certainly much more fun if they are read after the novels.

This time Orlando has to deal with something that looks like a murder (the deceased is not actually completely dead, although he lacks his head), but the mysterious almost-death of the Royal Policeman of Kansas is not the only mystery in the Kansas/Oz simworld, because there is unrest in the otherwise peaceful and idyllic simworld. And civil war threatens---

The story is a wonderful return to OTHERLAND and I hope that Tad Williams will write more of Orlandos adventures. It is a great, fun story, especially for readers familiar with OTHERLAND. I suppose it is somewhat less succesfull as a stand-alone OZ story, but readers looking for a new OTHERLAND fix will be delighted.

{Oz Reimagined: The Boy Dectective of Oz: An Otherland Story}
By Cervantes
I'll start by saying that the novels this story birthed from, The Otherland Series, are possibly my favorite novels of all time. So needless to say I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to once again return to the digital world of Otherland!

When I first read Otherland I was excited each time the characters would find themselves in different digital simulations, from ancient Egypt and Alice in Wonderland, to more completely unique realms in the book and especially Oz.

I just can't say enough about Tad Williams' ability to create a unique and fascinating world and story and then fully transport his readers into that place. He is possibly my favorite author of all time, and if you have not read him yet, then I would make one of his books the first one you read. I would start with is Otherland series if he is new to you, and then definitely come here and pick up this book as the cherry to top off your Otherland collection.

That being said, this is a very well written work and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The glass cat was witty and enjoyable and Orlando {The Boy Detective of Oz} was just as enjoyable as he was during my highly enjoyable read of the Otherland Series years ago. I was not let down at any moment and loved the twist at the end of the story. I won't be heading on to other works in this Oz series by different authors from here, but if you like Tad, or think you want to give a great author a read, then I just can't suggest this book and all of his other books enough!

Have a wonderful day! Do yourself a favor and pick this or one of his other books up. You'll be hooked on Tad for years to come.

Impeccable - A Journey to a Beloved Land
By Amberizzle
I am a huge fan of Tad Williams' "Otherland" series. In my opinion, books just don't get any better than that. So when I heard that "Oz Reimagined: The Boy Detective of Oz" existed, I dropped what I was doing to pick it up. I wasn't disappointed with what I found! While it's only a short story (damn you, Mr. Williams, for not giving us MORE OTHERLAND!), it's both a fun and poignant one. We get to check in on one of my favorite characters and what he's up to since the events of the Otherland series occurred. It seems he's putting his immortality to good use, but there's a melancholy about him, too, that reminds me of how very sad I was when his fate was sealed in the other books.

I can't tell you how happy I was to check back in on Orlando Gardiner, not to mention the new Oz/Kansas! Great writing from Tad and I hope to see more from the Otherland-verse, even if they are short stories!
