This translation of the second Dalai Lama's (1475-1542) poetry carries an inner joy and beauty: for instance, "Her silken shawl a forest of evergreens, gently trembling in the cool mountain breeze" describes the Dvakpo region in southern Tibet. A highly qualified Tibetan translator, Mullin researched the archives in Dharamsala, the spiritual headquarters of the Dalai Lamas, for over 20 years. He divides his work into three parts. Part 1 elucidates the Dalai Lama's lineage and central Buddhist concepts. Part 2 is based on the second Dalai Lama's autobiography and Wish-Fulfilling Tree , a 16th-century work by his disciples'; Mullin's rendering of the life of Gendun Gyatso, as the second Dalai Lama is known, is superb. Part 3 provides the background for each poem. In addition, the present Dalai Lama provides an insightful foreword in which he states that Gendun Gyatso was the greatest of the early Dalai Lamas. These charming, wise, and songful teachings are highly recommend ed.

Inspiring and Amusing

The 2nd Dalai Lama is one of the most interesting figures in this impressive lineage of scholars, yogis, poets and saints. Glenn Mullin has devoted much of his life to the works and lives of these great men (or are they the same man?) and provides us with a valuable volume here.
The 2nd is called "Mad Dalai Lama" because he is one of those "crazy yogis" whose enlightenment freed them from the bonds of conventionality. This liberation is evident in his poetry, which is translated here. It is wild, fun, irreverent, and yet profound and beautiful and genuine. The translations of the poetry retain this character beautifully, and each is also accompanied by a short commentary (very helpful!).
This is an attractive book, and would make a nice gift, even for people who are not Buddhists or don't know much about Buddhism, since the poems are accessible and interesting, and the book is well written.

This filled in a lot of blanks for me on the subject matter. The verses are great. I wish I could read them in their original Tibetan. I assume this is a very good set of translations.

This is a truly great novel!

I read this novel in my high school lit. class and liked it, but it wasn't until I read it again just recently that I really came to appreciate this excellent piece of fiction. It is moving, and heartbreaking, and I couldn't put it down. I also feel a kind of connection to this book because it is set in my home town of Flint Michigan. If you like stories about teengae angst, and the classic anti-hero then this is the book for you.
I do however, have to disagree with another reviewer who said the appeal of this book is limited to men only. It appealed to me, and I felt a real empathy for the main character. Trust me, there are plenty of girls who go through these kinds of situations, and feelings.

A Remarkable Novel

The only thing preventing me from rating "The Car Thief" with five stars is its limited appeal. In my opinion, this book should appeal to all men who have passed through (or are passing through) adolesence.
At first I felt the novel to be slow, and quite boring, but I realized that the more I read it seemed the author was doing something abstract to me, as the reader. The structure and pacing of the novel completely pulls you into a world of frustration and depression. More than most characters in literature, I found myself deeply identifying with the novel's main character, Alex Housman. His struggles depict the aimless melancholony one feels as a teenager. Having gone through the transition from child to adult, I found myself fully understanding (if not always agreeing with) Alex's actions.
Theodore Weesner should be commended for his portrayal of the father/son relationship, between Alex and his father, which is really the heart of the novel. Through deceptively simple actions and dialogue, Weesner brings to life a terribly complex relationship that, in the hands of another author, might be difficult to understand.
One reviewer said it best that the true meaning of this novel seeps up between the words. Weesner has placed something special into his work that is impossible to pinpoint, but communicates perfectly the intention of this story.
An excellent novel that might not speak to everyone, "The Car Thief" certainly has a lot to say to those willing to listen.

It Would Be a Crime Not to Read

Alex Housman is a broken boy from a broken family. Nothing really shocking or unusual that he gets in trouble with the law for stealing cars, which he has no reasoning for doing other than he can. His home life consists of living in a small apartment with a father who is larger than life especially when he is hitting the bottle, although he doesn't physically hurt his son, is he hurting him in other ways? Alex's mom is not in the picture at all for she has started another life with another man and has taken his brother Howard with her. To say this young man's life has its ups and downs would be an understatement, but aren't most teenagers lives this way. It is all on how they handle these situations that will decide what kind of adults they become. This is story on how one such teenager makes his choices that will change his life either for the better or for the worst...you will just have to read the book and find out which.

I am not one to compare books with other books like some feel they need to. I prefer to let the book speak for itself on how the author wished it is to be translated. I also would not say this book is a "coming of age" read; labels like this don't give the book justice.

Although it is set in year where I wasn't even born yet, the childhood problems presented are the same as today. The overwhelming pressure for a young person to do something extraordinary with their lives when life has dealt them a not so great home life is a common theme in any year. Even though I am a female, I still felt that I could relate to the main character, even if it was partially from a mother's point-of-view. I felt pity and sympathy for him, wanting to grab him sometimes and ask him, "what the hell are you thinking?" as if he was one of my own sons. Maybe it could be a good book to show parents how their actions really do effect their children and what not to do. How being an alcoholic, even a non-violent one, can push a child to grow-up before they are ready and cause them to make wrong, sometimes, very wrong choices. Also how being an absentee parent may really make the child confused and feel unloved. {Coming off the soap box}. Okay back to how I feel about the book; I highly recommend it as a book that should be read as it is and not to be compared to any other book. I can see it being a great read for required reading in high school, especially as a teaching tool. Young and old alike, in my opinion, will find it a good read. Just let the book take on the life it was meant to.

Dr David Servan-Schreiber is clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and co-founder of the Center for Complementary Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Servan-Schreiber stands out here in the plethora of books dedicated to integrate views on the mind/body approach. As a hard scientist and having his own battle against cancer, he calls our attention to very old concepts based on nutrition, exercise and meditation using new interesting angles.

Well travelled, Glyn has visited nearly forty countries, trekked in the Himalayas, spent six weeks hitchhiking across North America and had his collarbone broken by a bull in Pamplona. He is married with two daughters and lives in Leicestershire. He is currently working on the sixth and concluding book in his Adventures of Odysseus series.

Fantastic!!!

Having devoured the previous books in the series—King of Ithaca, the Gates of Troy, the Armour of Achilles, and the Oracles of Troy—I couldn’t wait for this, the latest instalment, to reach us. I have always been enchanted by the myths and legends of ancient Greece, the Odyssey in particular, and it has been beautifully retold here. Glyn Iliffe continues the story, brilliantly leading us from the aftermath of the siege of Troy into Odysseus’s fateful journey home to his beloved Ithaca, and he captures all that I love about the story… the exciting battles, the heartache of a home just out of reach, the romance, the monsters.The problem now is that I have to wait for the next instalment :(

Like Homer’s original, Glyn Iliffe’s series is destined to become a classic!

“From one adventure to another the pace never lets up. Like Homer’s original, Glyn Iliffe’s series is destined to become a classic!”

That’s the strapline I gave to Glyn Iliffe for the cover of this book and I think it about sums it up. The Trojan War is over and it’s time – at last! – for Odysseus and his men to go home. Back to the wife and child he hasn’t seen for a decade. But it’s not going to be that easy is it?

Anyone who’s ever read the Odyssey will know there’s still a lot of story to be told and Glyn uses this book to do so. Gone are the schemes and plots to get inside Troy and, in their place are fantastic islands populated by bizarre monsters like the Cyclops. Truly this is a tale of magic and adventure!

And yet, the characters Glyn has created are – here more than ever before – portrayed as REAL people, with real flaws and emotions. They attack an innocent village, for example, purely so Odysseus can gather some more plunder (wealth and slaves) to take back from the long war. This is how it was back then and the author doesn’t shy away from it – it’s just a part of life, but it really shows us the type of hard men we’re dealing with and it’s a great counterpoint to all the fantasy that permeates the story.

The battle scenes are excellent – vivid, exciting and brutal, while the pacing of the tale is just about perfect, drawing the reader in from the very start and not letting go until the end. And it’s a long book so you’re really getting your money’s worth here, as Odysseus and his side-kick Eperitus lurch from one horrible situation to another, even visiting Hades along the way.

Glyn Iliffe has been lucky in a way with this series because much of the tale has been written for him, so he “just” has to flesh it out in his own style. BUT that can also be a curse and I think the end of this particular book shows that. If you know the story of Odysseus from Homer’s original you will know his voyage home is not an easy one – far from it. And as a result this novel is very dark, with a lot of death and sadness and I did feel it started to become rather oppressive just as it neared the end.

But things finish on a hopeful note and the next book is set up perfectly!

Glyn is now self-published and I think this new novel really proves his mettle as a writer. Given his original books had the benefit of major in-house editors, cover designers etc I can say this, and his previous self-published book The Oracles of Troy, stand alongside them and, in fact, are probably BETTER.

The Voyage of Odysseus should be out NOW – I hope you pick up a copy, but DO start at the beginning if you haven’t read the previous books. They’re ALL excellent.
