Disorganized and a waste of money

SUMMARY OF MY REVIEW: Save your money and get free guides at the Cape Town tourism office instead!!!

Lonely Planet guides usually rate pretty good in my view, but this guide to Cape Town has made me re-think my devotion to Lonely Planet books. The one positive thing I have to say about this book is that it is small and packs easily, and that is why I think this guide deserves even one star.

The book is a very disorganized rambling description of Cape Town and neighboring communities. The guidebook begins with a historical overview, which is appreciated, but then is divided into sections that defy logical order. One of the first sections in the book, for example, is about wineries. Why is this section near the front of the book? Shouldn't more essential Cape Town items like lodging and dining come before wineries? Some destinations, such as the wine country, have different descriptions in more than one section of the book, making this book even more frustrating to use.

Additionally, there are very detailed descriptions for things like how to buy a car in Cape Town (how many vacationers are actually going to buy a car and then resell it while on their vacation???), but descriptions of more touristy things like Table Mountain or the Kirstenbosch Gardens are lacking.

Speaking of lacking, when you're in a new city, good maps are essential. So why are the maps in this guide so lacking in detail? The free maps at the Cape Town tourist office are ten times better.

It would be a much more effective guidebook if (1) it were organized in a more logical fashion, and (2) gave readers a clearer picture of what is a "must see" versus something not so good. Frommer's has a pretty good guide to South Africa in general, but I bought this one because it was specific to Cape Town and because it was small and portable.

Bottom line is that if you go to Cape Town, avoid using this as a guide. I'm sure there are better guides out there. If not, the tourist offices in Cape Town are EXCELLENT resources.

Deals with the city well

This book deals with a complex city in an understandable manner, and was very helpful in the planning of our trip. I would recommend it, though get the latest edition

Straightforward and Interesting

What I like most about this book is its readability. The tone is very engaging and makes you want to read on. The illustrations (almost all in color) are plentiful and are an invaluable accompaniment to the text.

I would agree with other reviewers that the biggest drawback to this book is its price. The price is way too high, in my opinion, particularly for a paperback book. For that kind of money, I want something sturdier, that will stand up to years of use. This is the only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.

Good geoscience book and science book in general

My only previous exposure to geology or geophysics came from books/classes about the solar system where the Earth is taken as just one example of a planet. This is the first book I've read dedicated to the subject and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

At a high level its coverage includes, the origin of the Earth, geologic time scales, the Earth's interior, the origin of the Earth's magnetic field, volcanoes, plate tectonics, how the continents have varied with time, the interaction of the oceans with land masses and past climate fluctuations.

This book actually covers a lot more material than I expected, including paleobiology and ecology (which I enjoyed reading, but sometimes found it a little too political). There is actually quite a lot of material on paleobiology. It does overlap a fair amount with one of the authors other books, 'Bringing fossils to life', but it wasn't excessive and was well done. There is an appendix with some very nice high-level cladograms.

Although this book doesn't require any particular background, it covers a lot of material and requires some effort to learn it. The authors put in some effort to actually teach the subject and the book illustrates some very interesting science. It also provides some nice illustrations of how science is done.

One nice thing about this book is that it has a lot of color photographs and drawings. That's somewhat unusual among the (non-astronomy) science books I've seen at this level. I found it made the appearance much nicer.

Overall, I liked it a lot and learned a lot from it.

Superb if it's as good as the first edition

I used the first edition of this book by Dott and Batten as an earth science major back in the early 70's, and thought it excellent. I don't know how the new edition stacks up, but the original book was as fine a piece of writing for a textbook as I had ever come across, and geology boasts better than average writers for such things. For example, there is the redoubtable Arthur Beiser, whose many books maintain both a high level of readabilty as well as scholarship.
One major change in the content of the book would no doubt be in regard to the theory of orogenesis, or mountain-building. The first book placed great emphasis on the geosynclinal theory and orthostatic rebound mechanisms. This one is sure to emphasize plate tectonics as the geosynclinal theory seems to have waned in popularity.
The original version of this text was one of the best science texts I ever used in college. If this later edition is half as good it will still be better than 90% of the others.

About the Author
Nick Romanowski is a zoologist, writer and photographer who has been fascinated by all forms of aquatic life from a young age. In the course of researching interactions between plants and animals, he established Australia’s first indigenous wetland nursery, giving him the freedom to research, experiment with and write about a broad range of animals from across most of this continent. He has written numerous articles on indigenous fishes and aquatic invertebrates, as well as many books including three recent practical guides from CSIRO PUBLISHING: Planting Wetlands and Dams, Wetland Habitats and Wetland Weeds.

It is good, with a lot of examples in matlab and c, maybe, it should take more care about the erratas in c code, because there are some errors that can confuse very much when you are developping a project.

Where the included cd-rom?!?! Cheating Publisher!

This book was supposed to come with a cd-rom. It would be a very useful volume with the disc, the one that is supposed to be included. Without the disc, the utility of this book is essentially nil. Judging from the packaging, the lack of a disc was not a mistake. Rather the description of the book on the publisher's website is grossly misleading. Shame!

Do not buy this book or anything else from this publisher, CRC Press, until they clean up their act and stop cheating buyers!
