Interesting, but not a book you can't put down

It's nice to learn about the situation in Latin America in such a microcosmal type of way, but the book tends to go on and on sometimes, not always fascinating. A lot of the stories about individual Bolivian women are very interesting. Again, it's interesting to learn about someting so small, domestic servants in Bolivia, that can be applied to something so big, the entire country of Bolivia, or for that matter many socially startified countries.

I love Ragtime it is my favorite American musical right behind PARADE by Jason Robert Brown. I love having the full vocal score for this show...and the book is great. I beleive it has the complete script in it. Like how an operetta vocal score is set up with pages of music then the lines in between the numbers. Like the Sweeney Todd vocal score.

It's n attractive looking book with a list of instrument doublings and a few black and white photos from the original broadway production. It has an appendix with the London playoff of Buffalo Nickel Photoplay, Inc. and the original Broadway version of He wanted to say the the mini reprise of the theme from Journey On.

It is expertly arranged for Piano/Vocal from the composer's copy rather than the orchestral score. It is arranged for piano with the occasional third line which contains either important solo instruments or another important accompaniment part.

Overall it's a great book and I have no complaints.

Great for playing and accompanying

The other review below (4/27/09) pretty well covered it; this score is nicely engraved and complete. It corrects a lot of mistakes found in the orchestral parts that Music Theatre International uses for its licensed productions. That can lead to some confusion when using this score in rehearsals, but nothing too major. It is almost identical to the engraved piano-vocal score MTI uses, but a little easier to read since it has been more fully edited. Similarly, it includes ALL of the dialogue between songs and over the underscoring, which is great for a rehearsal accompanist.

Probably my only criticism is that there are NO measure numbers anywhere in this score. None. This was the biggest hassle for me using this score in rehearsal. To write them in by hand, I had to compare this edition to the MTI piano-vocal score, because often there were added or dropped measures marked "32, 32A, 32B," etc. Repeats sometimes are counted twice, sometimes not.

Also, since the "Harry Houdini" number was dropped after the Broadway production and eliminated from the licensed version, it has also been removed from this edition. This means all song numbers from Act 2 will be one number off from the conductor's score and orchestra parts. Again, not a huge deal, but something to be aware of for anyone else planning to use this in rehearsal.

You will also not find any of the "alternate key" versions of songs in here. Like the other review said, the appendix does include the alternate reprises of Journey On and Buffalo Nickel, and the alternate ending (as heard on the Broadway cast album) of He Wanted to Say.

The Ultimate Ragtime Lovers' Score

This is the real deal, folks. I am over-the-moon happy at how complete this book is. It has all the incidental music, exit music, etc. (on top of all the fantastic main songs, of course). Time and time again, this score has left me breathless. I look forward to playing from this book for many years to come.

One minor quibble: I wish there was an option to buy this book spiral-bound. It is rather difficult to keep the book open while playing from it at the same time. I plan on taking it to a local bookstore to get it coil-bound there. Otherwise, this has been a wholly satisfying purchase.

Great Short Story

This is a short story but it is well written and the chemistry between Jace and Laila is hot, hot, hot! The gist of the story - Laila was sent out to the ranch in the middle of nowhere to do a story on cowboys/ranch; and Jace the owner of the Ranch is the ultimate rugged, hot and great looking cowboy with a bit of clumsiness and shyness thrown in. Perfect! The chemistry/attraction between the two of them began at the airport and from their we get to see a the development of a relationship between the two. The love scenes were beautifully done and kept you on the edge! Overall, a really great story.

He had me at, "if it's okay with you, I'd like to court you" !

I've read a few of Tali Martel's stories, and I have simply fallen head over heals in love with her heroes. As soon as Jace asked to court our heroine, I melted inside and went all giggly and warm. I mean, you can't get as sexy as this guy right here! He's a gentlemen (at least he tries is hardest to be despite the whorish efforts of the heroine, THROWING HERSELF AT HIM! I mean if i were her, I would be feeling all kinds of horny too, but it's not every day that a man wants to COURT YOU! Give him a couple days at least woman! Sorry, I digress), a COWBOY (hello, every girl's fantasy!), a perfect mix of shy and virile, and last but not lease, he's just gorgeous. I can definitely say that he is why I love this story. The story-line was good, used before, but good.

The only cons I can think of (and this is just me and my preference), is the fact that they jumped into bed after ONE DAY, and then proclaimed love after sex…It just doesn't happen. Sex does not equal Love, but that is just my conviction. Another con (one less biased lol), was the spelling error here and there. Either than that, I love Tali Martel's books, and I'm looking forward to whatever else she has in store for us.

If you're a sucker for heroes who are not only sexy, but want to do right by the heroine, then this is your book. If you don't really care for something like this then move along because this is your average cowboy falls in love with city girl type book.
