Passing the CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature Exam

Congratulations! You’re joining the millions of people who have discovered the value and educational advantage offered by the College Board’s College-Level Examination Program, or CLEP for short. This test prep covers everything you need to know about the CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam, and will help you earn the college credit you deserve while reducing your tuition costs.

GETTING STARTED
There are many different ways to prepare for a CLEP exam. What’s best for you depends on how much time you have to study and how comfortable you are with the subject matter. To score your highest, you need a system that can be customized to fit you: your schedule, your learning style, and your current level of knowledge.

This book, and the online tools that come with it, allow you to create a personalized study plan through three simple steps: assessment of your knowledge, targeted review of exam content, and reinforcement in the areas where you need the most help.

THE REA STUDY CENTER
The best way to personalize your study plan and focus on your weaknesses is to get feedback on what you know and what you don’t know. At the online REA Study Center, you can access two types of assessment: a diagnostic exam and full-length practice exams. Each of these tools provides true-to-format questions and delivers a detailed score report that follows the topics set by the College Board.

Diagnostic Exam
Before you begin your review with the book, take the online diagnostic exam. Use your score report to help evaluate your overall understanding of the subject, so you can focus your study on the topics where you need the most review.

Full-Length Practice Exams
These practice tests give you the most complete picture of your strengths and weaknesses. After you’ve finished reviewing with the book, test what you’ve learned by taking the first of the two online practice exams. Review your score report, then go back and study any topics you missed. Take the final practice test to ensure you have mastered the material and are ready for test day.

If you’re studying and don’t have Internet access, you can take the printed tests in the book. These are the same practice tests offered at the REA Study Center, but without the added benefits of timed testing conditions and diagnostic score reports. Because the actual exam is computer-based, we recommend you take at least one practice test online to simulate test-day conditions.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM
The CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam consists of approximately 80 multiple-choice questions, each with five possible answer choices, to be answered in two separately timed 45-minute sections. The exam covers the material one would find in a two-semester college-level course. The examinee is assumed to have an extensive background in the areas of prose, poetry, and drama, but knowledge of specifc works is not required.

The Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam is divided into the following percentages:

35–45% Poetry

35–45% Prose (fiction and nonfiction)

15–30% Drama

The three forms of literary expression are broken down as follows:

30–45% American Literature

50–65% British Literature

5–15% Works in Translation

The above areas are further broken down into these time periods:

3–7% Classical and Pre-Renaissance

20–30% Renaissance and Seventeenth Century

35–45% Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries

25–35% Twentieth Century

Some colleges may require candidates to take an essay section in addition to the multiple-choice section. The essay section is comprised of two 45-minute questions. One question requires candidates to analyze a short poem and the other question requires the test-taker to apply a generalization about literature to a novel, short story, or a play that they have read. The essay section is administered in paper-and-pencil format and is graded by the institution, not the College Board.

ALL ABOUT THE CLEP PROGRAM
What is the CLEP?
The College-Level Examination Program is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in North America. CLEP exams are now available in 33 subjects and test the material commonly required in an introductory-level college course. Examinees can earn from three to twelve credits at more than 2,900 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. Who takes CLEP exams?
CLEP exams are typically taken by people who have acquired knowledge outside the classroom and who wish to bypass certain college courses and earn college credit. The CLEP program is designed to reward examinees for learning—no matter where or how that knowledge was acquired.

Although most CLEP examinees are adults returning to college, many graduating high school seniors, enrolled college students, military personnel, veterans, and international students take CLEP exams to earn college credit or to demonstrate their ability to perform at the college level. There are no prerequisites, such as age or educational status, for taking CLEP examinations.

However, because policies on granting credits vary among colleges, you should contact the particular institution from which you wish to receive CLEP credit.

Who administers the exam?
CLEP exams are developed by the College Board, administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), and involve the assistance of educators from throughout the United States. The test development process is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the test are appropriate.

OPTIONS FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL AND VETERANS
CLEP exams are available free of charge to eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees. All the CLEP exams are available at test centers on college campuses and military bases. Contact your Educational Services Officer or Navy College Education Specialist for more information. Visit the DANTES or College Board websites for details about CLEP opportunities for military personnel.

Eligible U.S. veterans can claim reimbursement for CLEP exams and administration fees pursuant to provisions of the Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2004. For details on eligibility and submitting a claim for reimbursement, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website at www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/testing.htm

CLEP can be used in conjunction with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which applies to veterans returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation. Because the GI Bill provides tuition for up to 36 months, earning college credits with CLEP exams expedites academic progress and degree completion within the funded timeframe.

Not sure I needed this one

I purchased 5 REA CLEP books:
CLEP Introduction to Educational Psychology (CLEP Test Preparation)
CLEP Introductory Sociology w/CD (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP Exam (Test Preps)
CLEP Biology w/ CD-ROM (CLEP Test Preparation)
CLEP College Mathematics w/CD-ROM (CLEP Test Preparation)
CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature w/ Online Practice Exams (CLEP Test Preparation)

I also purchased the CLEP Official Study Guide 2012. This was only worthwhile because I was taking so many tests. It only contains a sample test for each CLEP - and there are no detailed answers. I will say I think it was helpful but I also do not believe it made a real difference in terms of pass / fail on the tests.

For the first three listed, it was enough to read the books a couple of times and then take the tests. Some of the material wasn't on the CLEP and there was material on the CLEP that was not in the book. That is to be expected given the broad topics covered. There is enough material in each of these three books to pass the CLEP they cover. I crammed a full semester of these classes into two weeks of study.

**NOTE** The sample tests are an important part of the learning process. There is information in the tests and detailed answers that is not covered elsewhere in the text. Do not underestimate the need to review the sample tests. They also give you good practice on timing. I considered this important for the Math and Literature tests. I was worried about spending too much time on each question for these last two. This is why I was disappointed with the lack of computer based testing with the Literature book.

The other two CLEP books require specific reviews.

College Mathematics: This was the toughest of the five for me personally. I do not feel the book covered the material in enough depth to prepare you for the test. It assumed you knew an awful lot that I did not know. There are drill questions at the end of each section. It would have been more helpful if they included detailed answers. There were a couple that I never did figure out. I do not consider myself math challenged but I also admit that I am not a math major. I spent a lot of time on-line utilizing other resources. Analyzing and Interpreting Literature: I'm not sure this book really added value for me. The tests were helpful in getting me familiar with the format of the test (the printed version was all I had to work with - see above). However, there isn't much within the text that actually helped me prepare. In all fairness, I am an avid reader (not poetry!!) and could have simply taken this test at any time. If you are not much of a reader this book might be a good guide on what to read. It does not contain a list of what to read but if you read the material it uses as examples, it may help. Reading this book alone will NOT prepare you for this test.

Got a perfect score on the CLEP exam!

I purchased this book a week before my scheduled CLEP exam, did the diagnostic test and got a 24, then spent the next few days studying. I read the book, took notes, and took both the sample exams online. I got scaled scores of 61 and 62 on the two sample exams, so I kept my appointment to take the exam as scheduled. I got a scaled score of 80! In fact, one of the poems on the exam version that I took was also part of one of the online exams that REA offered. If you take the diagnostic test, study the areas suggested, and do the practice exams, you should have a good indication of whether you are prepared for the CLEP. Highly recommend!

I passed! The only literature exposure I had was a nine-week course 15 years ago. This book helped me brush up on my literary terms. The two practice exams helped a lot along with explaining the correct answers and why the other choices were incorrect. After I took the practice exams online, I would go back and see what I got wrong and why they were wrong, which is what I think helped me the most in passing the actual Clep exam. I also purchased the 10.00 college board practice exam and that also helped.

A Cornucopia of Exercises

I like two things about this book. The first is that it is very thorough and complete. Exercises, both stretching and strengthening, are included for basically every major muscle group or extremity motion. Furthermore, the book is divided up well enough that you can find what you're looking for fast.

Secondly, I like the fact that this book is evidence-based, meaning that it backs up what it suggests with references from the scientific literature. In fact, it's so good that it can be a great place to start a literature search from.

Know too that this book is mainly written for people who have some medical background of sorts, so if you're just an average reader looking for some workout exercises, this probably isn't your book. Rather, I feel like the book is better suited for athletic trainers, personal trainiers, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, massage therapists, and so on. Practitioners looking for more info on the shoulder might also want to check out Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for more detailed ex's on rotator cuff tear prevention and rehabilitation.

Who organized this textbook?!

The information in this textbook is great, but I feel like it's scattered willy-nilly around the book. I pretty much utilize the index as my table of context. I find this text frustrating to use, and more time consuming than some of the information is worth. I don't know what this new edition accomplished but it wasn't organization or making it reader friendly!

This is a really hard book to get through. The material is NOT difficult, but this book seems to present in the most difficult way possible. The chapters are not well organized, the language is not easy to get through, and there are better texts on the subject.

1. This is a great book to get more tricks and knowledge for the quantitative part of the GRE. It has hundreds of exercises of several types, it is well-written and reviews in detail every subject tested in quantitative GRE. Finally, it has a good, thorough diagnosis test. In summary, if you have a book for general preparation (like the ones sold by Kaplan) and you really need to have a high quantitative score (for those who want to attend courses like computer sciences, physics or economics), this one will be a great complement! --Guilherme Oliveira

2. I have to say that I love this book. I took a Princeton Review GRE class. I started off with a 610 on the math section. When I was finished with the class, I was getting about 650 on the practice tests. I have been working through the GRE Math Prep Course to get a more rigorous treatment of the problems. I took the Powerprep test today and got a 750. The Nova book does things at a much deeper level than the other stuff I have looked at. --A Student

3. At first I tried the Kaplan, Barron's and Princeton Review books, but this by far is the best book if you want to do well. You will probably need to buy Barron's GRE exam book to get basic review of math or the Kaplan GRE exam workbook if you are a little rusty. But after reviewing these books, definitely get this one. I have gone over this book for the past four weeks and my math skills have dramatically improved. The other brands may get you to an average score but this book will definitely get you scoring highly (700+). I took a practice test last week and did very poorly and in just a week of intense review of this book (timing myself rather than just going through the book slowly to understand the concepts) my score has gone up by 100 points! I hope to keep improving since I have yet to master every concept in this book, but I believe that with each concept I master my score will definitely improve. --greyay

Extensive Math Review But Missing Some Key Points

I bought this book as one of my final purchases for my GRE prep. It had been very highly rated and I needed a more intensive math review after purchasing GRE for Dummies, Cracking the GRE by Princeton and the Barrons 800 High Frequency Word List. The fact that the book separates the question levels of difficult is one of the better aspects of the book. The sheer number of questions to practice with is also very helpful.

However, there are still numerous flaws that left me unsatisfied. I found the reviews of many concepts to be lackluster at best, giving questions in the medium or hard sections with no preemptive preparation in the review part of the section. Also, I found numerous questions to be tediously full of problems that need more time to work on than should be necessary for a GRE question. Also, I found the types of questions themselves, while helpful to concept practice, not at all written in the same manner as the GRE questions you can typically find in the PowerPrep or in a Princeton book.

The math section on the GRE is all about tricks, traps and simple ways to solve problems. Many solutions offered in the answer sections provide complex if not completely unnecessary solutions - adding extra variables where no variable really need be added, for example. They show complex ways of solving QC problems with a D answer that need only basic logic to prove as a D.

Lastly, I feel a math book for the GRE should be teaching you how to do the least amount of math in your 45 minutes and how to immediately spot a trap. This book only minimally mentions traps and tips to find them.

Great book for the problems

This book had the best review problems of all the GRE Math books I tried, including REA and Kaplan. It will not give you step-by-step instructions for the problem solving, so you do have to do some of the work on your own to understand the solutions, but I think that only helps as long as you can take the time to go through them.

I took the GRE's last month and did great on the quantitative section. Compared to this book, the GRE math section actually seemed easy. I would recommend this to anyone who already has math knowledge, but hasn't done these types of calculations in years. It had been over 5 years since my last college course, and this book got me back up and running. Took me about 2 months to completely go through all of the problems and understand the solutions. Good luck!
