A reformed drug dealer, a desperate widow, a bigtime crook and a compassionate cop are the players in this perfunctory kidnapping yarn set in San Francisco. When he is released from prison, he is determined to go straight, but hard times force him to seek out Phillip Addison, a business mogul with many shady operations on the side. Addison makes Morgan an offer he can't refuse: either recruit some fellow ex-cons to kidnap the children of recently deceased dot-com multimillionaire Allan Barnes, or his own kids will suffer. Against his will, Morgan hatches a plan. Meanwhile, Allan's widow, Fernanda, is struggling to make ends meet, since unknown to nearly everyone, Allan lost all his money in bad investments before committing suicide. The San Francisco cops, led by Insp. Det. Ted Lee, find files suggesting that Addison is plotting something, but even heavy police protection can't prevent Fernanda's youngest son, Sam, from being snatched. Lee moves into the Barnes mansion to oversee the search for the kidnappers and watch over Fernanda, but in the end Morgan plays the crucial role in saving Sam. The novel begins slowly, with lengthy introductions to all the principal characters, and never picks up speed, with Steel narrating as if from a distance, glossing over critical scenes and skimping on dialogue. Reluctant villain Morgan is a sympathetic bad guy, and Steel engineers the requisite romance between Ted and Fernanda, but this is thin fare.

Her husband recently died, and she should be worth half a billion, but her husband actually left her broke. San Francisco detective Ted Lee is the man who pieces together the crime and tries to protect the family while hiding his interest in the noble Fernanda, to whom is he is attracted. Morgan is also attracted to Fernanda, seeing her as the embodiment of the life he could have had. This lackluster suspense novel and its plastic characters will have automatic appeal for Steel fans, but other readers may find it wanting. Patty Engelmann

Not bad, but not her best

As you're reading Ransom, you do get the feeling that yet again, D. Steel is trying to find some new magic to maintain her readership and capture their interest...give them reason to keep hanging on. Does she succeed? Not quite, but she doesn't fail entirely.
Ransom is one of the first times that I can think of (after reading all 60 of her books) that she attempts a bit more of a calculated and complex storyline- merging 3 into one. She does ok at this, the central story line is about a family who's near poverty after the father lost his millions in the stock market and committed suicide-leaving the mother and her 3 children on their own. And with all of that to handle, the change from living as millionaires to saving every penny and selling off all of their belongings; now they have to handle the threat that someone is out to committ a crime against the family, testing them further.
Of course, like any D. Steel book there's a bit of romance, but actually not too much compared to the suspense that she tries to create. She really does make an effort to make this book different from her others and she half-succeeds. Yes, I enjoyed the stories and the ending. I even liked the characters, but yet again, I just felt like something was missing. This book is not my favorite of hers, not up to par with her previous books Heartbeat, No Greater Love or Jewels. Perhaps in an effort to pump out a large number of books, she's sacraficed quality.

While I can sympathize with their plight, I did not find there to be enough facts. It was more similar to what one would find in a magazine, not a book. Perhaps their being Australian, my being in the USA was the reason for this difference. I do respect their effort. Thank you for the opportunity to obtain and review.

I loved this book

I loved this book! The author has really brought to life the fascinating personalities of great pianists of the past and created a contemporary context for their advice. I am in sales and also coach and support a sales team, and this book is helping me develop a new perspective on the best way to help them succeed. The writing style and all the quotes are very motivational and I’m inspired to take up piano playing again after a 40 year break!

Short and Exceedingly Sweet

This is my favorite discourse book by Paramahamsa Nithyananda. It is a collection of question and answers. His answers are incredibly beautiful and uplifting and the insights (clicks as he likes to call them) abound and are transforming. I love being able to pick it up and in just a few pages feel touched and transformed at the deepest level of my being.

A edgy and raw MUST READ book for anyone who is dealing with drug and alcohol addiction. There is HOPE.

A dark raw glimpse into the drug and alcohol lifestyle most people never experience or understand. I laughed, cried and grieved as I read about Garvar's life, the abuse he endured and the path he traveled to get where he is today. Few survive the drug and alcohol addicted lifestyle that he lived without permanent scars on your soul, even fewer make it out alive. I applaud and praise Garvar for the battle he fought to gain his humanity back from the edge of the dark abyss he lived his life on. This book will shock you, make you laugh, cry and finally give you hope for anyone you know who struggles with the anger and betrayal caused by childhood abuse, the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and the damage it causes. I'm so proud of you Garvar!!

Unbelievably raw and uncensored look into the reality of addiction. Mr. Brummett holds you captive with the intensity of his stories and travels through addiction. Anyone who would like a better understanding of the grips of addiction and alcoholism would benefit immensely from reading this book. The illustrations are incredible and made me feel like I was getting to know the author. I liked the idea of reading short stories in this book, the only problem was that I could not put it down. It would be nice to see this book in every alcohol and drug treatment center across the country. If you like books like "Hardcore Zen" by Brad Warner, you will love "The Scent of Jasmine Cools the Rage" by Garvar Brummett. This is a must read.

I've tried for days to come up with a review but everything I write just seems so trivial and doesn't do justice to the words within these pages. I couldn't just let myself say "Great Book!"

This book is not for the faint of heart. The anger...no...rage, desperation, humor, hopelessness,vileness, and hope are so intricately entwined that it's difficult to distinguish the individual emotion within the pages, as well as within myself as I read. I would recommended this for those who struggle with addiction themselves and that they may find hope. I recommend it for those who have no clue, such as myself. The struggle and horror of daily life for some people is appalling and heart-wrenching. I am encouraged to get off my ass and find some way to make a difference even if it's a simple bucket of chicken.

The language! The language is horrific! But without it, I cannot imagine it would have invoked the deep emotion I feel when reading these stories. This is a true look into the challenges of homelessness and addiction. These stories will make you laugh, cry, and simply feel stunned in horror and shame. This is not a book by a man who spent time studying and researching the topic; this man lived in those deep dark trenches. His knowledge is something one rarely sees in written form. This is not a book based on opinions and statistics but true, real life experiences. You will find a level of understanding of how people can be so...vile. This book will invoke a plethora of emotions throughout. It's not all horrifying, at times, I found myself laughing so hard my eyes slammed shut!! I found a real-life awakening for myself, having had little to no exposure to the darker side of life. I found a level of compassion within me that I rarely, if ever, have seen. My heart breaks for this man whose "normal" life was something that I've never considered possible, even by the strongest of humans -- never considered as real, actually. Who lives a life like that and survives? Knowing that he is a success story and he made it though all of that, gives me hope for his continued successes and for humanity.

Thank you Garvar. Your bravery to open yourself up and put your demons out there for the world to see (and judge) is the truest indication of hope and pride. Your courage and tenacity for a positive outcome in your life will surely be a light for others as well. I hope there is more to come. Keep on, Motherf***er!!
