Take lemon, make lemonade?

A great idea for a book, poorly executed. The fault is Rankin's alone - Ms. Klum is famously photogenic, she looks terrific, and the paper quality can't be beat. But the layout ideas are terrible, the worst being liquid chocolate. Why would anyone seek to hide the world's most beautiful woman that way?
Bot worry not! Between some cheap document frames and a pair of sewing shears, maybe 8 or 9 of these photos are gotta-have-it keepers that, if you're of that generation and still single, you can post on a single blank wall as a matching set. Sounds tacky, but wow!, does that really work!

Dynamic Personality

When Rankin's Heidlilicious arrived, the book was wrapped in shrink wrap. While removing this plastic, I immediately could appreciate the physical quality of this book. It seems many book publishers are looking for ways to reduce the costs associated with publication and quality often suffers as a result. Heidilicious is the exception.

The dust jacket is thick and double folded at the edges, providing sturdy protection to the hot pink cloth bound boards of the book. If the dust jacket is removed, a smooth-lined silhouette of the female form is embossed in white on the front. The contrast between the white figure and the pink cloth is striking.

The binding appears tight and double-stitched and should survive more than one generation of heavy use.

The high quality of Rankin's photographs are consistent throughout the book and the paper stock used for printing is thick high quality gloss. The ink goes all the way to the edges of the paper.

The mood of the photographs remains playful throughout, but the approach is very dynamic. Heidi mimics a kitten, is clothed only with chocolate syrup, reveals an angry clenched-fisted snarl, frolics nude on the beach, and remains stunningly sexy regardless.

There is a text interview by her husband, Seal, and an interview of Heidi herself. This text is translated into several languages and first appears to be longer than actuality.

If searching for criticism, one may discover a couple of page-spanning photographs that are interrupted by the middle seam of the book, making them difficult to fully appreciate.

Overall this is a quality photographic essay of personality and liberating sexuality. Rankin provides a beautiful collection that constantly reminds of the playful fun side of humanity, and choosing Heidi to help inspire this message was brilliant.

Wish there were more outfits

I guess because of the cover I was expecting more playful outfits. Something a little more playful Victoria Secret like. It is definitely not that. It is an artsy look at some photographs of Heidi. The book, paper and binding get a 5 star for sure very, very well done. I wish they would redo this with some more of the stuff the demographic might like.

We home school and we used this book for 10 grade high school science. Not being strong in science myself it covered in great detail what I myself didn't know. Good quality and detailed. There is a web sight and code you can enter after each chapter for a on line test. IT then scores it for you. You have the ability to retake the tests as many times as needed.

Starred Review. Many will greet this taut, clear-eyed memoir of grief as a long-awaited return to the terrain of Didion's venerated, increasingly rare personal essays. The author of Slouching Towards Bethlehem and 11 other works chronicles the year following the death of her husband, fellow writer John Gregory Dunne, from a massive heart attack on December 30, 2003, while the couple's only daughter, Quintana, lay unconscious in a nearby hospital suffering from pneumonia and septic shock. Dunne and Didion had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years, and Dunne's death propelled Didion into a state she calls "magical thinking." "We might expect that we will be prostrate, inconsolable, crazy with loss," she writes. "We do not expect to be literally crazy, cool customers who believe that their husband is about to return and need his shoes." Didion's mourning follows a traditional arc—she describes just how precisely it cleaves to the medical descriptions of grief—but her elegant rendition of its stages leads to hard-won insight, particularly into the aftereffects of marriage. "Marriage is not only time: it is also, paradoxically, the denial of time. For forty years I saw myself through John's eyes. I did not age." In a sense, all of Didion's fiction, with its themes of loss and bereavement, served as preparation for the writing of this memoir, and there is occasionally a curious hint of repetition, despite the immediacy and intimacy of the subject matter. Still, this is an indispensable addition to Didion's body of work and a lyrical, disciplined entry in the annals of mourning literature.

Didion's husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne, died of a heart attack, just after they had returned from the hospital where their only child, Quintana, was lying in a coma. This book is a memoir of Dunne's death, Quintana's illness, and Didion's efforts to make sense of a time when nothing made sense. "She's a pretty cool customer," one hospital worker says of her, and, certainly, coolness was always part of the addictive appeal of Didion's writing. The other part was the dark side of cool, the hyper-nervous awareness of the tendency of things to go bad. In 2004, Didion had her own disasters to deal with, and she did not, she feels, deal with them coolly, or even sanely. This book is about getting a grip and getting on; it's also a tribute to an extraordinary marriage.

A Klidoscope of death and grieving

Joan Didion after the first 60 pages has become a kindred spirit to me through her writing. There is no recipe for grieving and at times it's like your in someone elses house and can not find anything you need. Words, sentences you've spoken but can not remember. Places and going through the motions but did you really do it or you just thought so. The Awful power of grief can derange the mind. Thoughts, sights, smells, the physical body are stretched so thin it's beyond reality and fantasy.
When my dearest husband died, I lost days, forget phone numbers, people's names, whether I showered. Reading this book provides me with somber reality that not just myself had entered the dark whirlpool of which I was too weak and lost to find my way out. This book as allowed me to read about my own road of grief... Which is not close to ending. And

An interesting book

Joan Didion's writing is exquisite in its precision and detail. However, having been through a searing period of grief myself some years back, I was surprised that her recollections did not resonate for me, but then, I did not lose a spouse. I found the book to be frustratingly disjointed, but I also see that as purposeful and an effort to represent her feeling of profound disorientation. And I found her constant name-dropping and precise recollecting of trivial detail, such as what she might have had for dinner, distracting and wholly immaterial to the narrative. For me, reading the book was an intellectual exercise, not an immersive experience.

Touched many nerves

I am a widow of eleven months, having lost my husband suddenly at the age of 58 (he had just celebrated that birthday 13 days earlier, I was 57) to the same sudden "widow-maker" heart attack, though my husband's was not preceded by any warning or foreshadowing at all - and I found this book to be one of the most helpful and relatable of the many I have read so far. In her easy to read style Didion gives true description to the inexplicable and uncontrollable thoughts and reactions she and women like me have experienced with the sudden loss of a husband with whom we had built a rich and sustaining marriage. I found myself agreeing with and relating to many things she described, though her story was complicated by her daughter's grave illness which pre-dated and continued after her husband's death. I recommend this book to those who have been widowed and are struggling through the confusion of grief or family or friends of someone in that circumstance.

About the Author

Mike Sullivan is a Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike has taught at Chicago State for over 30 years and has authored or co-authored over fifty books. Mike has four children, all of whom are involved with mathematics or publishing: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Mike III, who co-authors this series and  teaches college mathematics; Dan, who is a Pearson Education sales representative; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school mathematics. When he's not writing, Mike enjoys gardening or spending time with his family, including nine grandchildren.  

 

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College.  He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics.  Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

No Access Code - Description is Misleading

I bought this as a NEW book in order to have the online access code. The description makes it seem like it should be supplied but that is not the case. It should instead be made clear this DOES NOT come with the access code so there is really no reason to spend so much for a new book when you can get a like new, almost new, or even new from elsewhere at a much lower cost and still have the same item and still have to buy the access code separately.

Excellent Book!!

This book is a masterpiece for logical thinkers but however for those who are more practical, there should have little more examples and articulate with specific details. I recommend this book for those who want to become extraordinary engineers, physicist, or any field in critical thinking.

Dr Antonella Invernizzi is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Child Research at the University of Wales, Swansea. Jane Williams is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Wales, Swansea. A former practising barrister, her research interests are in the areas of Human Rights, particularly children's rights, and law and policy. She has published widely on these and related areas.
