Like Land of the Living [BKL Mr 15 03], this one focuses on a London-dwelling protagonist who must prove a point to disbelieving family, friends, and police. Miranda is dating a charmer named Brendan until she discovers him reading her diary and kicks him out. Dumped by Miranda, Brendan woos and wins her sister, Kerry. Gradually Miranda realizes he's more than just sleazy--he's sick. But her family and friends only see the charming face he shows them and believe that Miranda is the one who was dumped and won't let go. When a member of her family dies, Miranda feels that Brendan must be involved. But can she prove it before he kills her? In typical French fashion, the surprise ending will leave readers shaking their heads and grinning. Another not-to-be-missed adventure from a consistently satisfying author. Jenny McLarin

Sociopathy 1A

Every woman should be educated on how sociopaths operate. They, according to THE MASK OF SANITY, can fool anyone including psychiatrists, forensic analysts and in this novel even the police. Who should ABSOLUTELY KNOW BETTER. For you who have daughters I recommend you educate yourself and then educate them. Poor Miranda, NO ONE believed her! I knew almost from the first descriptive sentence that he was evil. How easily we are fooled! Aside from these comments I felt this was a good read and was completely blindsided with the ending! I gave this four stars because I couldn't believe how stupid the police presence was.
Addendum: I just found what looks like a very helpful book in addition to THE MASK OF SANITY. THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR by Martha Stout. Available here at Amazon.

NOT HER BEST WORK

I LOVE HER STYLE OF WRITING, I HAVE READ EVERYTHING SHE HAS WRITTEN. THIS IS DEFINATELY HER WORST BOOK. THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS ABOUT THE PLOT THAT WERE JUST PLAIN STUPID. IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING FROM JERRY SPRINGER. THREE WOMAN WHO ARE CLOSE TO EACH OTHER ALL GO OUT WITH THE SAME GUY. TWO OF THEM AGREE TO MARRY THIS GUY IN A MATTER OF WEEKS. THEN THE MAIN CHARACTER MIRANDA GETS TALKED INTO LETTING THIS PSYCHO MOVE IN WITH HER. WHEN THINGS GET REALLY BAD SHE DOESN'T EVEN TELL THEM TO MOVE OUT SHE IS THE ONE THAT MOVES. OK SO SHE FINALLY GETS THIS GUY OUT OF HER LIFE AND WHAT DOES SHE DO. TRACKS HIM DOWN AND PULLS HIM BACK INTO HER LIFE!! THEN THERE IS AN INCIDENT IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE THE POLICE LET THE LAWYER OF THE ACCUSED INTO HER CUBICLE TO YELL AT HER ABOUT WHAT A LIAR SHE IS. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. IT GOES ON AND ON. ALMOST EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PLOT IS RIDICULOUS. IF YOU WANT TO READ A REALLY GOOD BOOK BY HER GET "KILLING ME SOFTLY". I WOULDN'T BOTHER TO READ THIS ONE.

Creepy Fun

This was a super creepy page turner. I was hooked from the first sentence. French knows how to build suspense and keep you engaged throughout. I have to say, though, that this novel didn't really stay with me after I finished it. It's a great airplane book or vacation book, but it doesn't have the depth of her Frieda Klein books. If you're looking for a fun thriller, though, this is it.

About the Author
Jonathan Peters is an award-winning composer currently residing in the beautiful state of Colorado. He has worked in the music business for 24 years as teacher, director, composer, and recording artist. Mr. Peters holds a B.A. in liberal arts from Thomas Aquinas College and continued his graduate work at California State University Northridge where he studied advanced composition, theory, orchestration, and film scoring. Mr. Peters has completed over 40 works including 2 full length operas, a symphony, orchestral works, chamber music, choral pieces, and works for solo piano. His pieces have won many awards and recognitions including 1st place in the 1996 Composers Today Contest. He has professionally recorded and produced 6 CDs. His music has been performed both in the United States and Europe, is heard on the radio, and sells in over 50 stores world-wide. He is also the author of the Scholastic Music Series, a collection of educational CDs that use music as a tool to teach various academic subjects. The series has received starred reviews from School Library Journal and is carried in libraries throughout the country. Over the past 24 years Mr. Peters has given lessons in piano, composition, orchestration and music theory. He has worked with various orchestras, has been a guest conductor with the Cypress Pops Orchestra and has also directed various choirs in southern California.

Excellent. Excellent Book. Will not make your Head Explode as Other Books are Prone to do. Music Theory can be Hard. Not Here.

Excellent! I was expecting a dreary, academic, tome on, what could be, a very taxing subject. Not this one. The author took his time in making the book very engaging with some interesting side 'trips' into related Musical History, and a very interesting 'conversational' manner of writing. The Book has Quizzes at the end of each Section at which the correct Answers are reviewed at the end. Moreover, the Book includes your own, password-protected 'links' reviewing the Musical Passages referred to in the Book as well as some additional Quizzes for each Section in the Book. Pretty 'Slick'. In any case, I cannot More Highly Recommend this Book and this Author, Jonathan E. Peters, for the handling, and attention to detail and logical approach approach to learning a Taxing Subject, although we have not found it a Taxing as we have using other Books. Good Job, Jonathan !

EDIT: third-party web site with audio and quizzes is buggy; vital image links broken

Just made my first foray to [...], the site where the online audio samples and quizzes live. Quiz #2 had many questions pertaining to JPEG note figures that were flat broken. Even trying to load them by URL failed. The only way I could move through this most basic of quizzes was by control-clicking the broken graphics and scoping out the file names. (Yeah, basically I had to cheat just to move forward.)
Yes, your lifetime access is "free," and you're certainly getting your money's worth at that price.

My original impression of the text (reads fine in the Desktop app, barely usable on my 7th generation Kindle) stands for now. But I'm not impressed with the online "companion" at all. Won't be going back to udemy.com.

ORIGINAL IMPRESSION: Just digging into it now, but my first impression is that it's not well-suited for the basic hand-held Kindle. Mine is an e-Ink model I purchased a year ago.

* The text makes extensive use of audio samples and quizzes that require a login on a third-party web site. This is not a big negative, necessarily, but forewarned is forearmed.

* More of an issue: visuals on an e-Ink Kindle are so tiny as to be unintelligible. This will not be a problem for you if you're using the Kindle desktop reader for Mac or Windows, in which case you'll have immediate access to the audio samples, anyway.

* On my Kindle, the Table of Contents is grayed-out. OTOH, it's accessible in the Kindle Reader for OS X. You really don't want to have to page through the book, so the non-functional ToC is a bit of a turn-off.

* OK, so the reading experience leaves something to be desired. But if the content turns out to be easier to digest than the venerable Walter Piston text I used in college many moons ago, it's all good.

Best Book ever on music theory!

I have read a lot of theory books, seen a lot of videos, trying to grasp music theory. By far this is the best wreitten book I've ever seen and by far Jonathan Peters explains music theory in the most clear and logical way. Hands down buy this book if you're looking for an understanding into basic music theory.

Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the re-introduction of Sharica law relating to gender and the family, women's rights in Iran suffered a major setback. However, as the implementers of the law have faced the social realities of women's lives and aspirations, positive changes have gradually come about. Here Ziba Mir-Hosseini takes us to the heart of the growing debates concerning the ways in which justice for women should be achieved. Through a series of lively interviews with clerics in the Iranian religious center of Qom, she seeks to understand the varying notions of gender that inform Islamic jurisprudence and to explore how clerics today perpetuate and modify these notions.

Mir-Hosseini finds three main approaches to the issue: insistence on "traditional" patriarchal interpretations based on "complementarity" but "inequality" between women and men; attempts to introduce "balance" into traditional interpretations; or a radical rethinking of the jurisprudential constructions of gender. She introduces the debates among the commentators by examining key passages in both written and oral texts and by narrating her meetings and discussions with the authors. Unique in its approach and its subject matter, the book relates Mir-Hosseini's engagement, as a Muslim woman and a social anthropologist educated and working in the West, with Shici Muslim thinkers of various backgrounds and views. In the literature on women in Islam, there is no account of such a face-to-face encounter, either between religion and gender politics or between the two genders.

About the Author
Ziba Mir-Hosseini, a social anthropologist, works as a freelance researcher and consultant. She is the author of Marriage on Trial: A Study of Islamic Family Law in Iran and Morocco and the co-director of a documentary, Divorce Iranian Style, filmed in Tehran.

Thomas Risse is co-ordinator of the Research Center 700 "Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is founding director of the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies, and has been chair of the Executive Committee of the Joint Master program in International Relations of the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and the University of Potsdam.
